Lesson 4/20 of things I’ve learnt/figured out as a self taught nail tech!
You will always encounter difficult or disrespectful clients.
Difficult and disrespectful in their arrivals, unrealistic demands or underpaying.
Lesson: Build boundaries to protect your peace and your brand. Put up policies that even you should respect (late fees, deposits, no-shows). This isn’t being harsh, it’s doing what is necessary. Difficult clients didn’t break me, they taught me boundaries build respect.

3/20 Lessons I learnt/ figured out as a self taught nail tech!
Messing up a set you can’t fix perfectly. This one usually makes you feel like you want to become invisible😭💀
This may be through lifting, uneven shaping, messing up a design or polish bleeding.
I messed up sets I couldn’t fix perfectly. But turns out, that’s how mastery actually starts.
Lesson: Mistakes are part of mastery. The best artists aren’t the ones who never mess up, they’re the ones who learn patterns in their mistakes and improve systems (prep, products, timing etc).

Lesson 2/20 of things I’ve learnt/figured.
Slow days/no bookings.
Slow days humble… but they also mean an opportunity to market. Marketing matters just as much as talent.
Sitting in the salon with no clients can feel discouraging.
Lesson learnt: Being a nail tech is also running a business. Market, be consistent on social media (still a work in progress), building client relationships and referrals are just as important as your technique.

Not all clients will like your work. Some clients will hate their nails (talk about it publicly, or worse, posts about it)
Even though you put in effort they may still be unhappy.
Lesson: Skill matters, but communication matters more. As the artist, make sure you make clear consultations, clarify and communicate the shape/length or color tone before finishing or communicating when you can not execute a design, because managing expectations can prevent most of this.
When this happens, don’t take one opinion as a final verdict on your ability.
