Our Bodies Are Facing More Challenges Than Ever
In our recent posts, we’ve been looking at the many challenges our bodies can face every day:
• Environmental toxins and pollutants
• Heavy metals
• Chemicals in our surroundings
• Medicines and other substances
• Stress and lack of rest
• Highly processed foods
• Poor eating and drinking habits
• And so much more…
Our bodies have an amazing ability to maintain, repair and restore themselves. But they need the right nutritional building blocks to do their work — including vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, micronutrients and other essential nutrients.
At the same time, the way we farm, store and process food has changed dramatically. Convenience foods are everywhere, and our dietary habits and recommendations have changed over the years.
For many people, this can make maintaining a healthy weight, managing everyday symptoms and supporting overall wellbeing increasingly challenging.
So perhaps it’s time to ask:
Are we giving our bodies the support they need to do what they were designed to do?
In our previous post, we asked about cellular communication.
Now we’re going to take a closer look at an important part of that conversation:
GLYCANS
What are they?
Why are they important?
And what role do they play in how our cells communicate?
The conversation continues…

HAVE WE BEEN LOOKING AT FOOD THE WRONG WAY?
For decades, we were taught to think about healthy eating through the traditional food pyramid — with grains and starchy foods forming the broad foundation of the diet.
But nutrition science has continued to evolve.
A different approach looks not only at which food group something belongs to, but also at how carbohydrate-containing foods can affect blood glucose.
This is where the Glycaemic Index (GI) becomes important.
The GI ranks carbohydrate-containing foods according to how quickly they raise blood glucose. This shifts the conversation from simply asking:
“How much of this food should I eat?”
to also asking:
“What kind of carbohydrate am I choosing?”
The glycaemic-focused pyramid turns the traditional emphasis around — placing greater attention on:
🥦 Vegetables & fruit
🥜 Nuts & seeds
🫒 Nutritional oils
🥩 Quality protein
🌾 Lower-glycaemic whole grains
And, of course, regular physical activity remains an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
This doesn't mean that every food on the traditional pyramid is “bad” or that one pyramid explains the obesity problem.
It does, however, give us another way to think about nutrition and our everyday food choices.
🌿 Could changing the foundation of the way we eat change the way we think about wellness?
The next question is even more interesting…
👉 What does this have to do with glycans and cellular communication?

🍔 ARE YOUR FOOD CHOICES SUPPORTING YOUR LONG-TERM HEALTH? 🥗
We all enjoy convenience foods from time to time. But when highly processed foods become a regular part of our diet, they may affect our health over the years.
Some foods to enjoy less often include:
🌭 Processed meats – Regular consumption is linked to increased health risks, including certain cancers and heart disease.
🍬 Refined sugars – Too much added sugar can contribute to blood-sugar problems and inflammation.
🥤 Sugary soft drinks – Often provide lots of sugar with little nutritional value. Frequent consumption can contribute to weight gain and metabolic problems.
🍜 Instant noodles – May be high in sodium and low in fibre and essential nutrients.
🍕 Frozen pizza – Can contain high levels of sodium, saturated fat and refined carbohydrates.
🍟 Fast-food fries – Often high in calories, salt and unhealthy fats, depending on how they are prepared.
🌱 THE GOOD NEWS?
Small, consistent changes can make a meaningful difference.
✅ Choose more fresh, whole foods.
✅ Include colourful vegetables and fruit.
✅ Drink more water.
✅ Reduce highly processed foods.
✅ Give your body the nourishment it needs.
Your daily food choices are an investment in your future health. ❤️
