The Moroccanoil Origin Story

The story of Moroccanoil began with damaged hair, an unexpected salon treatment and argan oil.

Co-founder Carmen Tal owned a small salon in Montreal, Canada. After a colour service went badly wrong and left her hair severely damaged, she travelled to Israel. While there, her sister-in-law took her to a salon in Tel Aviv, where a stylist used an argan oil-infused treatment on her hair. Carmen was amazed by the transformation—her dry, damaged hair became noticeably shinier, smoother and more manageable.

She took a couple of bottles home to Montreal and began using the treatment. After seeing the results herself—and seeing her hairdresser use it successfully—Carmen became convinced that the product had international potential. She eventually persuaded her husband, Ofer Tal, to investigate the business opportunity, which led to North American distribution and the development of what became Moroccanoil Treatment Original.

From one treatment to a global brand

That original argan oil-infused treatment became the foundation of Moroccanoil. The brand helped popularise oil-infused professional haircare, with the Treatment becoming its signature product.

From that single product, Moroccanoil expanded into complete ranges for hydration, repair, colour care, curls, styling and professional hair colour, as well as body care—all built around the brand's association with antioxidant-rich argan oil.
