I’m incredibly excited to be speaking this week at the Profound Health Summit on 10 October 2026, at the beautiful Latimer Hotel just outside London.
I’m Dr. Sly Nedic, an IFM Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner from South Africa, passionate about helping women and men achieve greater vitality, health and resilience as they age.
My presentation:
BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES: SAFETY, PERSONALISATION & PRECISION
With menopause and bioidentical hormone therapy at the centre of so many conversations today, I’ll be exploring how we can move beyond simply “replacing hormones” and instead ask the questions that really matter:
Who needs hormone therapy?
Which hormones?
Which route?
What dose?
When should we start?
And how can we prescribe with greater precision and safety?
Because hormone therapy should be personalised to the person — not prescribed by a protocol.
I’m looking forward to an inspiring meeting of science, innovation and new thinking, and to sharing ideas with some of the brilliant minds shaping the future of health and longevity.

Hormone replacement therapy is not simply a question of “HRT: yes or no?”
There are hundreds of possible combinations of hormones, doses, routes of administration and treatment schedules. And these differences matter.
What works well for one woman may not be the best choice for another.
Your age, symptoms, medical history, individual risk factors and personal needs all matter when deciding which treatment is right for you.
This is why a personalised approach is so important. Functional Medicine looks beyond the prescription to understand the individual, helping guide hormone selection, dosing, monitoring and adjustments over time.
The question is not simply whether HRT is safe. It is which HRT, at what dose, by which route, and whether it is right for YOU.

Oxytocin: more than the “LOVE HORMONE” ❤️
We often hear about oxytocin as the hormone of love, bonding and childbirth.
But oxytocin is also a powerful neuropeptide involved in social connection, affection, trust, sexual response, pleasure and emotional bonding.
Dr Thierry Hertoghe has long discussed oxytocin in the context of well-being, sociability, emotional connection and sexual function — particularly when these aspects of life seem to change with age.
And this is where Functional Medicine helps:
Can I take oxytocin to feel better? Certainly! We should always opt to produce our own oxytocin. But if we are unable to produce it, we should temporarily use a compounding form.

We think about hormones as something working in isolation from the environment.
But hormone health is far more complex.
Some chemicals found in everyday makeup, skincare, body-care and hair products can interfere with hormone signalling. These are known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
And some chemicals used in personal-care products have also been linked to carcinogenic, reproductive or developmental concerns.
That doesn't mean every cosmetic product is dangerous—or that you need to throw out your entire bathroom cabinet.
It means pay attention to what you use repeatedly.
PFAS. Phthalates. Formaldehyde. Certain parabens. Triclosan.
Read the label. Reduce unnecessary exposure where you can.
And if you're experiencing hormonal symptoms, don't only ask, “Which hormone is low?”
Functional Medicine asks a bigger question:
WHY is my body struggling with hormonal balance?
Your hormones interact with your metabolism, gut, nutrition, stress, genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposures—including the products you use every day.
Your beauty routine is part of your health routine.
Save this post and check your bathroom cabinet tonight. 🔍

YOUR SKIN DOESN’T ALWAYS NEED MORE VOLUME. SOMETIMES IT NEEDS MORE COLLAGEN.
That’s where Thermage can be so valuable.
Thermage is a non-invasive monopolar radiofrequency treatment designed to improve the appearance of wrinkles and skin laxity by delivering controlled RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin.
It can be particularly useful when you are noticing:
• loss of firmness
• mild to moderate skin laxity
• fine lines and wrinkles
• changing facial contours
• skin that looks less “tight” or resilient
And unlike many energy-based treatments, RF does not target melanin as its primary chromophore, which is why monopolar RF can be used across a broad range of Fitzpatrick skin types when appropriately performed.
Thermage FLX has FDA clearance for non-invasive treatment of wrinkles and rhytids, including periorbital wrinkles. Clinical studies support the role of monopolar RF in non-ablative skin rejuvenation and collagen remodelling.
No added volume. No change of your facial identity.
Just the goal of firmer, smoother, naturally refreshed skin.

Everyone is talking about how safe hormone replacement therapy is.
But the more important question is: safe for whom?
HRT is not a one-size-fits-all prescription. The right hormone, dose, route and combination can be very different from one woman to another.
This is where a Functional Medicine approach can add another layer of personalisation — looking beyond symptoms alone and considering the individual woman: her medical history, metabolic health, cardiovascular and breast health risk factors, symptoms, lifestyle and relevant laboratory findings.
The goal is not to prescribe “more hormones”.
It is to find the right hormone, at the right dose, by the right route, for the right woman — and reassess as her physiology changes.
Because personalised medicine means the prescription is personalised too.

Do you feel irritable, moody, bloated, suffer from headaches, heavy periods or struggle to lose weight?
You may have heard the term “estrogen dominance.” But it doesn’t always mean you have too much estrogen.
Often, it is about the balance between estrogen and progesterone.
During perimenopause, progesterone can decline or become more erratic as ovulation becomes less consistent. Chronic stress can also affect ovulation and progesterone production, creating a relative estrogen–progesterone imbalance.
But there can be more to the story.
Insulin resistance may increase aromatase activity, shifting more testosterone toward estrogen. Impaired estrogen metabolism can affect how efficiently estrogen is processed and eliminated. Gut dysbiosis can influence estrogen recirculation through the estrobolome. And differences in estrogen metabolism can lead to metabolites with different biological activity.
So when a woman says, “Something is not right with my hormones,” I don't want to simply suppress the symptoms.
I want to understand WHY.
That is the Functional Medicine approach: look for the contributing factors, address the root causes, and personalise treatment rather than telling women they simply have to suffer through every period.

Many people now fast through the morning and have their first meal at 12 pm or even later, believing that the longer they fast, the better it must be for their metabolic health.
But the research on meal timing tells a more nuanced story.
A large prospective study of more than 103,000 people found that an overnight fast of more than 13 hours followed by an early breakfast before 8 am was associated with approximately a 53% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, having the first meal after 9 am was associated with a higher risk.
Other meta-analyses have also found an association between regularly skipping breakfast and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality.
These are observational findings. However, they do make the question of meal timing worth considering.
For me, there is another important consideration: what I eat when I break my fast.
I have genetic predispositions associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. I cannot change my genes, but I can influence how I respond to them through my lifestyle and food choices.
That is why my breakfast composition is non-negotiable.
I choose a breakfast built around protein, half a plate of colourful vegetables, olive oil, seeds and fibre, with minimal refined carbohydrates.
Not granola. Not pastries. Not a sugar-heavy breakfast.
I don't want to start my day with a glucose spike.
For me, this is not about following another restrictive diet. It is about understanding my individual biology and making choices that support my metabolic health.
Because perhaps we should not only ask, “How long did I fast?”
We should also ask, “When did I break my fast, and what did I break it with?”
