“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus" (Matt 14:28-29).

The disciples were at sea, caught up in a violent storm. Strong winds and crashing waves surrounded their boat, and they were afraid. Then Jesus came walking toward them on the water with a reassuring voice that said “It is I, be not afraid”. All the disciples on the boat heard His voice, but only Peter responded to the voice of Jesus.

The others chose to stay in the safety of the boat, but Peter responded differently - Lord if it is you, tell me to come. With one word from Jesus, everything changed for Peter – “come”. Jesus invited Peter to do the impossible and Peter stepped out of the safety of the boat onto the raging sea. In the middle of the chaos and perhaps one of the most frightening times of his life, Peter received a testimony, he witnessed a miracle - he was the miracle, he walked on water.

Through Peter we learn that faith begins with a desire to move toward Jesus. To hear when He calls and to answer. Peter pushed past fear and stepped towards the power of the word. As long as he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus, he walked on water. Through faith, the impossible became possible. Peter walked on the thing that could have destroyed him. From this, we learn that as long as you follow the voice of God, and walk towards Him, it is possible to overcome every obstacle in your path.

Like the disciples in this text, we often find ourselves in the middle of storms. Perhaps not storms of thunder and lightning, but the storms of trials and difficulty. Storms in marriage, storms in finance, storms of ill- health and storms in family. But while you are going through the storm, learn to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Steady your heart with His word.

Everything changed when Peter took his eyes off Jesus. He became overwhelmed by what surrounded him and began to sink. How easy is it for you and me to do the exact same thing? To focus on the trouble around us, instead of the power within us. Even when his faith seemed weak, Peter chose to call out to Jesus for help – Lord, save me. Scripture says immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him (Matthew 14:31).

No matter the situation you find yourself in, call out to Him, for He is a God that extends mercy and compassion.
