🌄 Long before Rooibos became a beloved South African drink and a global export, the Khoi and San peoples held and passed down traditional knowledge associated with the plant and its uses.

That knowledge remains an important part of the rich and shared heritage of Rooibos in South Africa.

In recognition of this contribution, the Rooibos Industry signed a landmark benefit-sharing agreement with the South African San Council and the National Khoi and San Council in 2019. It was the first agreement of its kind in the world to cover an entire industry.

Through this agreement, the Rooibos industry makes an annual contribution based on 1.5% of the farm gate price into community trust accounts. The funds support priorities identified by the communities themselves, including education, cultural heritage preservation and community development.

Rooibos is a uniquely South African treasure, with a story shaped by many generations. Recognising and honouring the traditional knowledge of the Khoi and San peoples is an important part of that story. ☕🌿
