Acne can happen to anyone but not all acne is the same. There are four acne grades that account for type, quantity, and severity of your acne:

Grade 1 (Mild): Acne simplex characterized by blackheads or whiteheads.

Grade 2 (Moderate): Acne simplex characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, papules (small, solid, raised bump), and pustules (small, pus-filled bumps that are larger than whiteheads). Skin may be red, inflamed, and painful.

Grade 3 (Moderately Severe): Acne vulgaris characterized by inflammation and bacterial lesions. Your skin may also have blackheads or whiteheads. A professional skin assessment is encouraged for medical grade treatment.

Grade 4 (Severe): Acne vulgaris characterized by deeper cysts (large, painful, pus-filled bumps) and nodular lesions (a severe form of inflammatory acne that creates firm, painful lumps), blackheads, whiteheads, papules, and pustules.
