Faster than you got rid of your lame ex, get rid of those dead ends. Who needs them?
They are destroying your growth from the ends up.
I mean it.
Look, if you grow 2-3 inches in 3-4 months, and I cut off .75” you still get to keep 1.5- 1.75”! And if we keep doing that every 3-4 (recommended during the grow out phase for shape)
You will grow and keep 5-7 inches of hair in a year!
Chopping those ends reduces the amount of damage significantly because those broken pieces don’t get to run up the hair shaft creating chaos. This could lead to much bigger corrections cuts, the appearance of more frizz , and holes throughout the hair.

Yes, you can have an excellent care routine with amazing products.
Yes, you can sleep in a bonnet and use a silk pillow.
Yes, you can do hydration and scalp treatments.
But if you have split ends and breakage at the ends- a cut is the best thing for it. Pinky swear.

For those who are in the maintenance stage of length, I usually suggest a shape up every 4-6 months. That will be determined by the clients hair goals and at home routine.
