From an opera house and post office to shops, businesses, and eventually Oasis, the Fogg Building has been a landmark in Columbian Square for generations.

In 1888, architect J. Williams Beal built what would become one of Columbian Square’s most recognizable landmarks. The benefactor was local businessman John Fogg. 💰

The building was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, with an opera house and public assembly hall upstairs and shops and banks on the first floor.

That distinctive tower has been part of the Columbian Square skyline ever since. 🏛️

Long before there were movie theaters, shopping centers, or modern entertainment venues, the Fogg Opera House provided a place for the community to come together. 🎭✨

The upper floor was designed as an opera house and public assembly hall — a place for performances, gatherings, and events.

Today, those upper floors have been converted into apartments, but the original character of the building remains.

📮 Did you know the Fogg Building was once home to the South Weymouth Post Office?

The 1896 Weymouth directory lists the South Weymouth Post Office at “Fogg’s Opera House Block.” And by the early 1900s, postcards were being made showing the Fogg Building and Post Office together.

Imagine stopping here to mail a letter more than 120 years ago. 💌📨

A very different Columbian Square…

This old postcard shows horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians, storefronts, and the Fogg Building standing at the center of it all. 🐴

The square has changed dramatically over the years, but the Fogg Building remains one of its defining landmarks. ✨

As Weymouth changed, so did Columbian Square…

The horse-and-buggy era gradually gave way to automobiles, new businesses, and a very different kind of traffic through the square…including the beginnings of the infamous intersection 🤪

This photograph gives us a glimpse of the neighborhood during that transition. 🚗
