August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month.

The American Academy of Dermatology set aside this month for one reason: hair loss is one of the most common conditions in the country, and one of the least discussed.

More than 80 million Americans are living with it. By age 35, roughly two-thirds of men have experienced some degree of it. And about 40% of everyone affected are women.

Most people notice something is different long before they say a word about it. They change how they part their hair. They stop taking photos from certain angles. They wait years before asking a single question.

That silence is the real problem. It keeps people from learning that thinning can come from thyroid issues, iron deficiency, hormonal shifts, stress, medication, or genetics, and that some causes are temporary and treatable. It’s almost always easier to address early.

Awareness months exist to shorten the gap between noticing and asking. So this August, talk to someone. A dermatologist, a physician, a specialist.
