Always remembering

The last known footage of Peter Ganci alive is four seconds long. He is being told the towers are about to come down. He was the top uniformed officer in the FDNY, with 11,000 firefighters under him. He called them his children. He ran the rescue of both towers from a command post on West Street, sending his men up the stairs while thousands came down. The South Tower fell on that command post and he lived. He went into the debris after his men, sent another chief north to safety, and stayed. Twenty-nine minutes later the North Tower fell on him. Peter Ganci is an American hero. 🇺🇸

25 years ago tonight, September 10, 2001… 💔 246 people went to sleep preparing for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep preparing for another day at work. 343 firefighters went to sleep preparing for their next shift. 60 police officers went to sleep preparing for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep preparing for another day of saving lives. And 1 K9 went to bed, ready to be a good boy. 🐾 They went to sleep expecting tomorrow to be ordinary. None of them knew they were living through their last night. By 10:00 a.m. the next morning, September 11, 2001, their lives had been cut short. Twenty-five years later, we know the history. We know the numbers. We know the photographs. We know the stories. But tonight, before September 11 becomes a date on the calendar again, remember this: They went to bed on September 10 just like we do. They had plans. People they loved. Things they were looking forward to. Ordinary little moments they never knew would be their last. So tonight, September 10, 2026, kiss the ones you love a little tighter. Hug your children. Snuggle your animals. Call the person you’ve been meaning to call. And never take another ordinary night, or another ordinary morning for granted. Twenty-five years later, we remember. We will always remember. 🇺🇸 #september11 #911 #91101 #fdny #nypd

Did you know there a spot where it looks like the World Trade Center once again has two twin towers? Let’s find this secret view of One World Trade Center. This view is found across the street from the FDNY Memorial wall, and the stairs that lead you to Liberty Park. (This is near the beautiful St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.) Remembering

On September 11, 2001, 343 firefighters died under the rubble at ground zero. In a New York City Fire Department tradition, at each funeral and memorial service, a so-called band of brothers — active and retired firefighters — played the mournful and traditional bagpipe tunes, like “Amazing Grace,” to, as they say, “pipe them to heaven.” The toll of the grief and the level of their loyalty was apparent when 60 Minutes’ Dan Rather spoke with some of the bagpipers in November 2021. “I’ve played more in six weeks, buried more guys in six weeks than I’ve done in 22 years as a firefighter,” one band member told him. This year marks 25 years since the attacks.
