Recently, I ran into another Sola Pro in the parking lot while I was carrying my umbrella and wearing one of my hats. She jokingly said, “No wonder your skin is so nice! You wear a hat and umbrella!” We both laughed, but then she said, “No seriously…what do you do?”

Although I don’t admit that it’s perfect, one of the things I mentioned was sunscreen.

Today is the perfect reminder that sunscreen is about protecting your skin’s health long-term.

Daily SPF and sun protection matter because UV rays from the sun damage the skin everyday even when it’s cloudy, cold, or just driving in the car. The damage builds over time and can lead to premature aging, wrinkles/collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, sun spots, and skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States with millions treated every year. 5 million are treated for skin cancer annually.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not applying enough sunscreen or not reapplying it correctly. Most adults need about one ounce of sunscreen to fully cover exposed skin. For the face alone, you should use about two finger lengths or 1/3 teaspoon of product.

Use your sunscreen as directed on the packaging. Most sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours and even sooner if you’re swimming, sweating, or outdoors for long periods of time.

Add extra sun protection when you’re out and about:
☀️ Hats
☀️ Sunglasses
☀️ Umbrellas/parasol umbrellas
☀️ Shade whenever possible
☀️ Protective clothing

Think of sunscreen as one layer of protection, not permission to bake in the sun all day.

I realized recently that wearing foundation over the years likely gave my skin an added layer of protection, especially when the products contained SPF. While makeup should never replace sunscreen, that extra layer over my skin probably helped minimize sun damage over time.

Protecting your skin now helps preserve your skin’s health, appearance, and function for years to come. If there’s one thing you do for yourself every single day, make it applying sunscreen! Your future self will thank you 10, 20, even 50 years from now. 😎⛱️
