A queen bee mates with several drones during a brief mating period early in her life. 🐝👑

Over one or more mating flights, she receives s***m from multiple males but stores only a few million s***m cells inside a specialized organ called the s***matheca. These stored s***m are enough to fertilize eggs for the rest of her life.

As the queen lays eggs, she releases only a tiny number of s***m at a time, allowing her to produce thousands of worker bees over many years.

Mating with multiple drones also increases the colony's genetic diversity, making it healthier and more resilient. 🌼🍯

🚀 It took a spacecraft 9.5 years and more than 3 billion miles to show us that Pluto was never the frozen, lifeless world we imagined.

On July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft swept within just 7,800 miles—or 12,500 kilometers—of Pluto, capturing humanity’s first detailed views of the distant dwarf planet.

What appeared in those images stunned scientists.

Towering mountains rise as high as 11,000 feet above Pluto’s surface. But unlike mountains on Earth, these peaks are built primarily from water ice. At temperatures approaching −390°F, water ice becomes rigid enough to behave like solid rock.

Beside them lies Sputnik Planitia, a vast glacier of nitrogen-rich ice stretching roughly 600 miles across. Its remarkably smooth surface contains very few impact craters, indicating that parts of the landscape are geologically young and continue to be renewed.

Scientists discovered that Pluto’s modest internal heat can slowly churn the nitrogen ice in enormous convection cells. Warmer ice rises, cools and sinks again—almost like a gigantic cosmic lava lamp.

New Horizons transformed Pluto from a distant point of light into a complex world of mountains, glaciers, atmospheric haze and possibly even a hidden subsurface ocean.
