3 signs your skin barrier needs love 🚨
Your skin barrier is your first line of defense — when it's compromised, your skin tells you. Here's what to watch for:
1. Tightness or dryness that won't quit. If your skin feels tight no matter how much moisturizer you apply, your barrier isn't holding onto hydration the way it should.
2. Redness or irritation. A weakened barrier can't protect against everyday irritants the way it normally would, leaving skin more reactive and inflamed than usual.
3. Stinging when you apply products. If products that never used to bother you are suddenly stinging or burning, that's your barrier waving a red flag.

How to prep your skin for fall 🍂🐼
Summer put your skin through it — sun, sweat, salt water, the works. As the season shifts, here's how to help your skin transition smoothly:
Add in a richer moisturizer. As humidity drops, your skin needs more support to stay hydrated and balanced.
Do a gentle exfoliating mask. Help slough off that summer buildup and let your skin breathe again.
Treat any sun damage. Whether it's a peel or biomicroneedling, fall is the perfect time to reverse some of that summer sun exposure.
Keep wearing your SPF. Yes, still! Just because summer's ending doesn't mean the sun stopped — protection is a year-round commitment.

3 skincare products I'm bringing to a deserted island 🏝️
If I'm stranded, my skin still isn't going without a routine. Here's what's coming with me:
SPF Serum (4-in-1) — my desert island MVP. It's mineral-based and reef-safe (so I'm not trashing the very island I'm stuck on 😅), with a light tint that avoids that white cast a lot of mineral SPFs leave behind. Vitamin C & E plus ceramides mean it's nourishing and protecting my skin at the same time — non-negotiable for island sun.
Gentle gel cleanser — versatile enough to deep clean without stripping my barrier. It removes dirt and debris while still keeping my skin hydrated, which matters even more when I don't have my full routine backing it up.
Rescue recovery cream — because even with SPF on, my skin's still dealing with heat, humidity, and wind burn out there. This is my PM step for some serious overnight healing.

If I could ban one ingredient... 🪄
Microbeads. Hands down. No contest.
This isn't just an opinion — I actually researched and wrote a paper on this back in 2013, advocating for them to be banned from product manufacturing. We were successful — Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 prohibited microbeads in Virginia and in the US! Here's why it mattered so much:
Microbeads are often plastic, and as they travel through our drain systems, they absorb toxic chemicals along the way. Because they're so tiny, water filtration systems can't catch them — so they end up straight in our rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.
Fish then eat them, mistaking them for fish eggs, which is toxic to them (and eventually to us, through what we catch and eat). Health risks have already been linked to fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and Great Lakes because of this.
The kicker? Research shows it'll take decades for the ecosystem to recover, since microbeads don't fully decompose — they just work deeper into the soil with no real way to process them.
Unfortunately, many states gave manufacturers 3-6 years to comply. With how easy online shopping makes it to order from anywhere, some products still slip through the cracks — much like microbeads slip through our water filtration systems. 👀
The most frustrating part? They're not even cost-effective for companies compared to more sustainable exfoliants like walnut, rice, coffee, or seed-based options. There's no good excuse.
