This week on , we’re taking a closer look at Grooming Tonic.

What is it? What does it actually do? When should you use it, and how do you get the most out of it?

We’re going to break down what Grooming Tonic is used for, its practical applications, and how to properly work it into your grooming routine.

No overcomplicating it. Just practical information to help you understand the products you’re using and why you’re using them.

With that, let’s get into it.

What exactly is grooming tonic, and why would you use it?

Think of grooming tonic as the foundation for a great hairstyle. It’s a lightweight product that helps make your hair more manageable, adds natural-looking volume and texture, and gives you control without making your hair feel heavy or stiff.

Why use it?

• Adds light control and natural movement
• Helps tame flyaways
• Makes stubborn hair easier to style
• Adds volume when blow-drying
• Works great as a pre-styler
• Creates a solid foundation for pomade, clay, or other styling products

How do you use it?

Work a small amount through damp hair, then comb it into place or blow-dry for more volume and control. Wear it by itself for a natural look, or finish with your favorite styling product when you need more hold.

The bottom line: Grooming tonic isn’t necessarily your finishing product—it’s the product that can make everything you use afterward work even better.

Know what’s in your cabinet. Know what it does. Cut the confusion.

This week, is all about understanding the difference between a taper and a fade.

Lengths and heights can vary with both styles, but knowing the fundamentals of each can make a big difference in getting the cut and look you want.

So, take this trip with me as we break down what separates a taper from a fade, how each one changes the overall look of your haircut, and what you should consider when choosing between the two.

The goal is simple: to help you walk into the shop knowing what you want, communicate it clearly to your barber, and feel more confident when you sit in the chair.

Let’s .

TAPER vs. FADE — What’s the Difference?

They might look similar at first glance, but a taper and a fade create two distinctly different finishes. Here’s how to know which one might be right for you.

THE TAPER
A taper gradually shortens the hair as it moves down the sides and toward the neckline. The transition is subtle, and there’s usually more length left around the sides and back.

A taper is a great choice if you want:
• A classic, natural-looking cut
• A softer transition between lengths
• More hair left on the sides and back
• A polished style that isn’t overly dramatic

THE FADE
A fade creates a much more noticeable transition from longer hair to very short hair. Depending on the style, it can fade all the way down to the skin for an extra-clean finish.

Fades can also be customized with a low, mid, or high fade, depending on where you want the transition to begin.

A fade is a great choice if you want:
• A sharper, cleaner look
• More contrast between the top and sides
• A modern, defined finish
• Plenty of options for customizing your cut

THE BIG DIFFERENCE
Think of it this way: a taper is gradual and subtle, while a fade is shorter and more dramatic.

Neither is better—it comes down to your hair, face shape, personal style, and the look you want to achieve.

Not sure what to ask for at your next cut? Show your barber the look you’re going for and talk through whether a taper or fade will work best for you.

Big comb. Big confidence. Same great haircut.

Here at Reformed Man, you’re getting more than a haircut. You might leave with a fresh fade, unsolicited life advice, sore abs from laughing, and the lingering question, “Why was Creed using a comb the size of a kayak paddle?” It’s all part of the experience.

Come for the haircut. Stay for the stories, the laughs, and the occasional oversized barber tool.

This week on , we’re talking about one of the most underrated tools in a barber’s arsenal: the foil shaver.

What is it? Why do barbers use it? And what makes it different from a regular razor?

Let’s dive into it.

WHAT IS A FOIL SHAVER?

If clippers lay the foundation of a haircut, the foil shaver is the finishing touch. This specialized tool is designed to remove the last bit of stubble, leaving behind an incredibly smooth, clean finish. Whether it’s sharpening the neckline, cleaning up around the ears, or creating crisp cheek lines on a beard, the foil shaver delivers the polished look that separates a good cut from a great one.

Unlike a traditional razor, the blades sit safely beneath a thin foil, allowing them to cut hair extremely close while helping reduce irritation, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. That’s why it’s a favorite for clients with sensitive skin who still want that fresh-shaved feel.

Not sure what your barber is using or how to ask for the exact cut you’re looking for? Let us help! Follow along with Cut the Confusion as we break down the tools, techniques, and terminology behind every great haircut so you’ll know exactly what’s happening in the chair.
