Post-operative lymphatic drainage and spa or cosmetic lymphatic drainage may look similar at first glance, but the goals and considerations are different.

Post-operative lymphatic care is specifically adapted to the recovery process following surgery. Treatment may need to account for the type of procedure, surgical sites, swelling, tissue healing, incisions, and your surgeon’s recommendations. Your therapist should understand post-operative anatomy and know when treatment needs to be modified.

Spa or cosmetic lymphatic drainage is generally focused on relaxation, wellness, temporary puffiness, and supporting normal fluid movement. It is not designed to replace specialized post-operative care.

If you’re recovering from surgery, make sure you’re seeing a provider who is appropriately trained in post-operative lymphatic care and understands your specific procedure. The right treatment starts with understanding the difference.

Having surgery? Your lymphatic care doesn’t have to begin after your procedure.

A pre-op lymphatic appointment gives you time to sit down with your therapist, ask questions, learn what to expect during recovery, and discuss your individual goals. We can also begin planning your post-op care so you understand what your treatment plan may look like and when lymphatic services may be appropriate based on your surgeon’s guidance.

Every recovery is different. That’s why we believe education and planning should happen before surgery, not when you’re already navigating the early stages of recovery. Ask your surgical team about incorporating a pre-op lymphatic appointment into your preparation.

Why do we recommend a treatment plan instead of just one lymphatic drainage session?

Because the body is an interconnected system, and meaningful change often takes time. A single session can be a wonderful opportunity to relax and support lymphatic movement, but consistent care allows us to work with your body over time and adjust treatment based on how you respond.

Think of it like caring for a garden. One day of watering can help, but ongoing care creates the conditions for the garden to thrive. Your treatment plan is personalized around your goals, your body, and what you’re experiencing. Give your body consistent support while allowing us to track your progress and adapt along the way 🌟

Our lymphatic system is one part of the incredible ecosystem that keeps the body functioning and moving. When an ecosystem becomes depleted or overwhelmed, it has fewer resources to support everything that lives within it.

Supporting movement, rest, and recovery help create an environment where the body has what it needs to do what it naturally does best: repair and restore.

When we spend long periods feeling stressed or overwhelmed, rest can sometimes feel unfamiliar. Learning to pause, receive care, and reconnect with your body can become part of the healing process. It’s about creating moments where the nervous system can experience safety and regulation.

What’s the difference between oncology lymphatic drainage and cosmetic lymphatic drainage?

The answer goes beyond the amount of pressure used. Oncology-focused care takes into account a person’s cancer history, treatments, surgeries, lymph node involvement, and overall recovery. It requires an understanding of how cancer treatment can affect the lymphatic system. Cosmetic lymphatic drainage is generally performed for wellness and aesthetic goals, such as supporting fluid movement and temporarily reducing puffiness.

If you’re considering lymphatic drainage, make sure your provider understands your specific needs and treatment history. Lymphatic care should be personalized.

One month until race day! 💗

We’re so excited to be back at the Girlfriends Run on October 18th, hosted by Pink Lemonade Project and Why Racing. We were honored to be part of this event last year, and we’re looking forward to bringing an even bigger Cohesive Therapy experience this year.

The Girlfriends Run brings women and the community together to support breast cancer awareness, celebrate survivors, and raise awareness for an important cause.

At Cohesive Therapy, we’re passionate about educating women on the role of lymphatic drainage in women’s health and wellness. For breast cancer survivors, lymphatic care can be an important part of supportive care, particularly following certain breast cancer treatments or procedures. We believe education and access to knowledgeable practitioners can help women better understand their lymphatic system and the ways they can support their health throughout survivorship.

Last year, we loved connecting with runners and attendees, answering questions, and introducing the community to lymphatic drainage. This year, we’re excited to expand our presence and create a larger-scale experience where we can share even more education and information about lymphatic health.

These photos are from last year’s race, and we can’t wait to be back!

More details about our Girlfriends Run experience are coming soon. In the meantime, sign up for the race through the Pink Lemonade Project or Why Racing website and make sure to come find us on October 18th.

We’ll see you at the finish line!

Have you ever wondered why dry brushing is often paired with lymphatic drainage?

Dry brushing can complement lymphatic drainage massage. Gentle brushing techniques provide light mechanical stimulation and help prepare the skin and superficial tissues for hands-on lymphatic work.

As part of a wellness routine, dry brushing can help exfoliate the skin, support circulation, and promote a refreshed, energized feeling. When combined with lymphatic drainage, it creates a relaxing treatment experience focused on supporting healthy lymphatic function and overall wellness.

We incorporate dry brushing into select treatments to complement our hands-on lymphatic techniques.
