Sometimes the change of seasons reminds us that we need to change our pace, too. šŸ‚

I recently returned from a few days away, expecting to step right back into my regular routine. Instead, my body had other ideas.

I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and reminded that knowing how to care for ourselves doesn't mean we always get it right.

Sometimes we need more rest. Sometimes we need fewer commitments. And sometimes the routines that served us well a few months ago simply aren't what we need today.

As we settle into fall, I've been thinking about how important it is to create routines that support us rather than become another source of pressure.

I shared more about this experience in this week's blog, Creating Healthy Routines as the Seasons Change, along with a few thoughts about listening to our bodies and making room for what we need.

šŸ Is there something you're feeling called to change about your daily routine this fall?

Headed back from the Bahamas after a busy but fun vacation with my brother.

Back in the office tomorrow rested, restored and ready to show up with healing hands and thoughts!

A Few Days to Unplug

I’m taking a few days away from the office September 30–October 5 and will return on Tuesday, October 6.

For part of that time, I’ll also be stepping away from my phone and the internet as much as possible — something I’ve been looking forward to and know I need.

So if you message, email, or reach out while I’m gone, I may not see it right away. I’ll get back to you once I’m home, reconnected, and back in the office.

I’m looking forward to a few days to unplug, be present, and enjoy a change of scenery. See you when I’m back. šŸ¤

Why Change Affects Your Body More Than You Think 09/29/2026

Do you ever feel like your body didn't get the message about your plans or goals? Sometimes we are going along fine, getting things done, and then all of a sudden the seasons start to change, and it's like we hit a snag in the pathway.

With changing seasons come changes in our body's needs as well. We may need more rest or less. We may need to eat differently or take more time recovering from our usual physical activities. Those may need to change too.

The good news is that we can adapt and change with the seasons to experience greater wellness, more productivity, and even a bit more joy.

Read my latest article for Brainz Magazine to learn more:

Why Change Affects Your Body More Than You Think Change is a normal part of life. We know this intellectually, yet our bodies don’t always move through change as easily as our minds think they should. Sometimes change is obvious: a new job, a move, a relationship...

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the ability to adapt—my own and others’.

For a few weeks now, I’ve noticed that my energy has been lower than usual. My interest in my work and responsibilities has felt heavy, and my emotions have been all over the place.

When I first noticed it, I connected it to some grief that resurfaced around a loss that wasn’t recent. I assumed some of it was because my home is still unsettled after significant damage from an August storm. I also considered that my new schedule and splitting my time between two clinics might simply be tiring me out.

But when I didn’t bounce back within a week or two, I became concerned.

Was I missing something? If so, what?

So I started listening more closely to what my body and mind were asking for.

I craved quiet. I wanted to be alone with my animals after work. I wanted to watch silly shows on TV. I wanted time in nature. I wanted rest.

I’ll be honest. It felt awkward.

I teach people to honor their needs and listen to their bodies and minds. Now I needed to do the same. And the information I was getting wasn’t particularly compatible with what I thought I *should* be doing.

I’m usually ambitious and focused. I use my time well. I’m productive.

Suddenly, I wanted nothing more than to do…nothing.

At first, I struggled with that realization. I felt a little sorry for myself. I questioned almost everything.

Then I decided not to push through it.

I allowed myself to rest between activities. I watched TV…during the day! I stopped using every bit of free time to create social posts, blog posts, and articles. I batched an entire month of writing and then actually allowed the available time to remain available.

And what happened next is what I already know happens when we honor what we need.

I started to relax.

The world didn’t fall apart. My business didn’t fail. The bills got paid. And I discovered, once again, that I didn’t have to manage everything all the time.

Slowly, I can feel some of my energy and interest returning—not because I forced myself back into my usual pace, but because I gave myself room to respond to what was actually happening.

And maybe that’s an important part of adaptability that we don’t talk about enough.

Adaptability isn’t always about becoming better at handling more.

Sometimes it’s recognizing that the conditions have changed and allowing ourselves to change with them.

Sometimes the adaptive response is to move forward.

Sometimes it’s to slow down.

And sometimes it’s to stop expecting ourselves to function exactly as we did before life asked something different of us.

I’m still finding my way through this season, and I’m paying attention to what comes next.

The irony is not lost on me.

Apparently, I get to practice what I teach, too.

I remember seeing a Gloria Steinem book on my mother's book shelf when I was a teenager. She was struggling to make her way in a world that didn't allow her a credit card in her name and refused her work because she was a woman with a child.

I didn't understand at the time. When I became an adult in the 80s and entered the workforce, I realized why women's history and thoughts about social structure were so important to her. I recall being questioned about my relationships and looked as if I was an object that needed to measure up.

What I experienced is no longer acceptable, and it was nothing compared to what she went through. We were both educated women with skills and abilities as well as minds of our own.

When I picked up Revolution from Within, the 1982 book Gloria wrote about inner-authority and political understanding.

Thank you Gloria sharing your briliance and strength with us!
