Dust from the world's largest hot desert is going to blanket parts of the United States

Every summer, strong winds lift millions of tons of fine dust from the Sahara Desert in North Africa into the atmosphere. This dry, dusty air mass — known as the Saharan Air Layer — can travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

This week, one of the largest plumes is expected to move over Florida before spreading into parts of Texas and other Gulf Coast states.

For most people, the biggest impacts will be hazy skies, reduced visibility, and especially vibrant sunrises and sunsets. Because much of the dust stays high in the atmosphere, only a small amount is expected to reach the ground.

However, the dust can temporarily reduce air quality, particularly for people with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions.

The plume also affects hurricane season.

Saharan dust contains much less moisture than typical tropical air and is accompanied by strong winds that increase vertical wind shear. Together, these conditions make it much harder for tropical storms to develop or intensify.

Meteorologists say this widespread layer of dry, dusty air is one of the main reasons tropical development across the Atlantic and Caribbean is expected to remain limited through at least mid-July.

While the dust may create hazy skies across parts of the southeastern United States, it is also helping suppress the formation of new hurricanes during one of the busiest months of the Atlantic hurricane season.
