Meet Turkey Tail—the forest’s striped little recycler. 🍄 It grows in thin, colorful shelves on dead hardwood and can be found much of the year; fresh growth is especially noticeable after wet weather. Identification clue: true Turkey Tail has tiny pores—not a smooth underside. Researchers have studied extract-specific beta-glucan compounds such as PSK and PSP for immune-related activity, but findings depend on the preparation and context.

Meet Cordyceps—the little orange fungus with a wild résumé. 🍄 In nature, Cordyceps species grow from insect hosts; cultivated C. militaris forms the bright club-shaped clusters shown here. Wild fruiting varies by species and climate, while cultivated Cordyceps can be produced year-round. Researchers are studying it for exercise tolerance and oxygen use, but human evidence remains preliminary.
