Today we celebrate you—with Melissa, your children, and all of us who love you—with a gratitude that is difficult to put into words.

Because this birthday could have looked very different.

I pieced together this imperfect little scrapbook from phone videos, Facebook Lives, family moments and fragments you shared along the way. It isn’t polished. It’s a living birthday card from a year none of us will ever forget.

And woven through all of it is the story of a man who stood.

Gabriel—

You decidedly led the charge.

You loved your wife fiercely.
You advocated for her relentlessly.
You questioned. You prayed. You spoke up.
You rallied your family.
You faced brutal realities without allowing them to become the final word.

And you refused to quit.

This is what a man of God looks like when the battle becomes real.

Not untouched by fear.
Not untouched by grief.
But anchored to something greater than both.

A warrior beside a warrior.
A husband beside his bride.
A man standing on the Word of God.

We watch fairytales about princes fighting for their princesses.

But this story actually happened.

And it cost you dearly. This long road has demanded nearly everything a man can give—body, mind, heart, resources and faith.

And still—you stand.

Today Melissa is here. You are together. Your family is together. And we get to celebrate another birthday with an entirely different understanding of what a gift that really is.

There are stories worth telling.

This is one of them.

Happy Birthday, Gabriel.

I honor the husband, father, son and man of God you have shown yourself to be.

And I thank God that when darkness came for your family—

you stood.

ALL OF THEM?

But I’m watching what’s happening to a generation, and I can’t stay quiet.

Kids are overdosing on fentanyl. Young adults are battling addiction, anxiety, hopelessness and confusion. Families are fractured.

Parents are terrified—and too many have been convinced that once the world gets hold of their children, all they can do is cross their fingers, pray and hope for the best.

NO.
Parents, we are NOT powerless.

One year ago tonight, our family stood at the edge of our own Red Sea.

Melissa’s heart had failed. She was at death’s door. And then—against all odds—a precious donor heart miraculously emerged.

But one enormous mountain still stood before us:

A HEART TRANSPLANT.

My son Gabriel, Melissa’s husband of 20 years, led the charge.

PRAY.

He called the troops—and they came. Family, friends, churches, saints around the world joined hands and hearts with us, storming heaven on Melissa’s behalf.

And suddenly—

SURGERY WAS ON.

So we rallied.

We prayed.
We walked.
The kids swam.
We stayed together.
We waited.
WE BELIEVED.

Because what in the world do you do while your wife, your mother, your daughter, your beloved is somewhere nearby having her HEART removed and another placed inside her chest?

You keep moving.

And you keep believing God.

Not far from our trek around the Dallas hospital, an extraordinary team was fighting for Melissa’s life as a precious donated heart was placed inside her chest and began to beat.

And then came the words we had all been waiting to hear…

“SHE MADE IT THROUGH!!!” 🙌😭❤️

GLORY TO GOD.

There are moments in a family’s history that become holy ground.

This is one of ours.

One year later, Melissa is HOME. ❤️ She is recovering. Loving her family. Homeschooling her daughters. Living the life we were desperately praying she would live again.

And we are STILL praying.
Still believing.
Still contending for COMPLETE restoration.

And to every single one of you who prayed us through those terrifying, miraculous hours—THANK YOU.

You stood in the gap with us. You carried our family before God when we needed an army. We will never forget it.

One year later, we look back across that sea and remember:

GOD MADE A WAY.

And the God who parted the Red Sea for us then is still making a way now.

The worship.
The tears.
The impossible circumstances.
And the mighty faithfulness of God.

We are still praying. Still believing. Still contending for complete restoration.

But today we celebrate an enormous victory and give all the glory to the God who makes a way where there SEEMS to be no way.

One year. One donated heart. One precious life. So many answered prayers.

To God be the glory. 🙏❤️
