FINALLY, SOME COMMON SENSE: A Florida sheriff says the dad who DREW A G*N at a school bus stop was the VICTIM after two teens ignored his repeated warnings and advanced on him.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek announced that the father will not face criminal charges. “To recap it, the individual with the g*n was the victim in this case,” he said.
The confrontation happened Sept. 18 near Southwest 174th Court and Southwest 175th Court in Indiantown as students boarded a bus for South Fork High School. No sh*ts were fired and no one was injured.
The dispute began the previous day when the father’s 16-year-old son brought pizza onto the bus. According to the sheriff, a 14-year-old demanded a slice, threatened the boy and struck him in the head when he refused.
The boy told his father, who spoke with the bus driver that afternoon. She said she would try to handle the situation.
When the father returned with his son Friday morning, the 14-year-old got off the bus and began yelling at him. Students then called over another 16-year-old who was already suspended and wasn’t riding the bus that morning.
Budensiek said the two teens “look like grown men” and continued approaching as the father repeatedly raised his hand and told them to stay back.
“They got all the way up on him before he pulled out a concealed weapon and told them to get back, which he’s legally allowed to do,” the sheriff said.
The teens retreated. The father immediately put the fi***rm away, drove around the corner, flagged down a deputy and reported exactly what he had done.
Detectives spent the day interviewing students and everyone involved. Budensiek said they received a consistent account of what happened.
The father is a security guard who was wearing a badge and legally carrying concealed. Budensiek said investigators would have sought warrants for the two teens “that went after the dad,” but the father declined to press charges.
“While it may not have been how I would have handled it, [he] did not do anything illegal,” Budensiek said. “You are allowed to stand your ground whether the person coming after you is 16 or 24 or 34.”
The teenagers later told WPBF they believed a fight was about to happen and argued that no fi***rm should have been displayed at a bus stop. One acknowledged that he should have dropped the pizza demand when the boy first refused.
Martin County NAACP President Jimmy Smith also objected, while former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg questioned whether Florida’s restrictions on fi***rms at school bus stops could apply.
Budensiek said partial clips circulating online showed only “a half of a video and a half of a fraction of the story.” He warned that the misinformation surrounding the case “undermines our law enforcement job.”
The father has now withdrawn his son from school and plans to homeschool him. “He just wants to be left alone,” Budensiek said. “He wants his son to be left alone.”
