Some people may look at this video and see just two horses goofing around being silly. in reality, Crixus is using Alec to fidget before releasing during his back massage! The fidgets help him shift into a parasympathetic state and actually help release tension!

Equine Bodywork 101: Understanding the Modalities
This one’s lengthy, but its worth it!
No two horses are built the same, and no two horses carry tension in the exact same way. That is why having a versatile toolkit of different bodywork techniques is so important. I believe in complete transparency when it comes to my education, so here is a look at what I bring to every session and how these modalities support your horse.

My Background and Education:
Certified Equine Massage Therapist through Therasage
Additional coursework in performance modalities through Therasage including Kinesiology Taping, Cupping, Red Light Therapy, Gua Sha, TENS, and MagnaWave
Continuing education in Myofascial Release through Freely Forward Bodywork
Continuing education in targeted Equine Craniosacral techniques through NBCAAM approved coursework
Advanced Fieldwork Student working toward Masterson Method Certification

Here is a breakdown of the modalities I use and why combining them makes such a big difference for performance and comfort.

Equine Sports Massage and Therasage Foundations
This focuses on the muscular system using targeted manual strokes to increase circulation, boost lymphatic drainage, and release general muscle tension.
Why it helps:
Improves muscle elasticity and range of motion
Flushes out metabolic waste after hard work
Prepares muscles for performance and speeds up post-ride recovery

Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points are hypersensitive spots within a taut band of muscle tissue. They often cause localized pain and referred stiffness elsewhere in the body.
Why it helps:
Releases deep muscular knots that restrict movement
Restores normal contraction and extension to muscle fibers
Alleviates chronic compensation patterns before they cause stiffness

Myofascial Release
Fascia is the continuous web of connective tissue wrapping around every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in the horse's body. When fascia becomes restricted, it binds up muscles and limits freedom of movement.
Why it helps:
Releases restrictions through the ventral chain, thoracic sling, and back
Restores natural glide and elasticity between tissue layers
Provides long-lasting relief across entire movement chains rather than just isolated muscles

The Masterson Method
This interactive modality works directly with the horse's nervous system. By using soft pressure and watching subtle visual responses like blinking, licking, chewing, and yawning, we guide the horse to release deep structural tension in key junction points like the poll, TMJ, neck, and pelvis.
Why it helps:
Accesses deep structural tension that hard physical pressure cannot reach
Shifts the horse into a relaxed parasympathetic state for genuine healing
Allows the horse to actively participate in letting go of tension

Equine Craniosacral Techniques
Gentle, subtle techniques focused on the delicate system surrounding the cranial structures, skull, spine, and sacrum.
Why it helps:
Eases restriction around the head, TMJ, and cranial sutures
Calms an overstimulated nervous system
Helps horses processing head tension, poll soreness, or mental stress

Supportive and Integrative Modalities
In addition to hands-on manual therapies, having a fundamental understanding of tools like kinesiology tape, cupping, red light therapy, gua sha, TENS, and MagnaWave helps in understanding how non-invasive targeted inputs can support circulation, cellular recovery, and tissue repair.

Why Combining Modalities Matters
Using a single technique limits what you can address. A horse might have myofascial restriction around their chest, a trigger point in their shoulder, and nervous system tension in their TMJ.
When you blend sports massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, nervous system releases, craniosacral techniques, and supportive tool knowledge, you address the whole horse: physical tissue, biomechanics, and the nervous system together.

Looking for ONE specific horse or mule for my final Block 2 case study!

I need one final candidate to wrap up my second Masterson Method fieldwork block. I am looking for a horse or mule in the Statesville, Troutman, Monroe, or surrounding route areas.
The candidate must be quiet and safe with having all four feet and legs picked up, held, and handled, as leg and lower-body releases are a key part of this protocol.

I am specifically looking for an equine showing signs of body tension—such as tightness through the poll, neck, or jaw, shoulder stiffness, girthiness, or reluctance to engage the hindquarters. Sensitive horses or mules that internalize tension and need gentle, nervous-system-based work are also great candidates.

In exchange for session documentation and photo/video release for my certification block, this session is completely free of charge. You will receive a full evaluation, interactive release work, and a breakdown of post-session stretches to help support their movement.

If you have a horse or mule that fits this description, send me a direct message with your barn location and a quick summary of what you are noticing in their movement or body!
