Sometimes living our values means going against the grain in the beauty industry.
We try to live our values throughout our business model, top to bottom.
That encompasses the ingredients we use, how we formulate, the packaging we choose, the farmers we work with, providing ethical jobs and benefits for our team, and also how we promote our products.
As an eco-friendly brand we look around and see the overconsumption pushed by the beauty industry, and our heart hurts.
As people oriented toward justice and healing we see that a few people have far too much, and that there are people in need that have too little.
We are always asking ourselves, “How we can best embody our values through our work?”
This year we made a very intentional decision that a large amount of our products would go to charitable groups that serve people coping with cancer.

Oh hi, we’re in a tariff war again. 😵💫😱🤬
The constant changes are creating chaos in the USA and Canada, and we discovered something weird over the last few weeks…
While perfumes and makeup products ARE definitely included in the list of tariffed items for some reason the code we’ve been using for over a decade for skincare is NOT on the list. 🧐
This is likely random given how thoughtless this entire process has been. Why include makeup and not skincare? Who knows. Let’s not pretend that any real intelligent thought or strategy was put into this. It’s entirely a tool for our foolish leadership to try to punish Canada for being independent. In the process it’s punishing many, many small businesses.
The green beauty community is all in this together, so we wanted to make sure our fellow indie brand owners, retailers, and skincare shoppers are aware that skincare may not be covered by the current tariffs.
We can confidently say we’ve used Harmonized Code 3304.99.50 for easily 10 years to export our skincare to many countries. That code is NOT included in the list of 50% tariffed goods. Neither is the 3401.30 code we use for our cleansers.
It’s a good idea to talk to the brand you’re buying from, and for brands to potentially talk to a customs expert or broker still. At minimum we felt this information was worth sharing.
Shipments with mixed goods might get lumped together under one code, so it could be a good idea to order skincare separately from makeup/perfume products for now.
We can all hope and pray that lawsuits will challenge this round of tariffs, but that could take a while. In the meantime we need to try to help each other muddle through this.
Many other products are affected including some food items, clothing, carpets, lumber goods, and parts for machinery. Canada is/was a major trading partner for the USA in all kinds of areas. You can expect to see the impacts of this in prices for many goods in coming months.
