This pile of leather straps seems unimportant, but they play a very important role in the handler yard. These straps hold the sides to the frames in the tanyard to keep them suspended and in motion.
They are made out of leather, not because it’s cheap or easy for us to make, but because the handler yard pits are connected via hollowed oak timbers that are original to the tannery. If a strap falls off, we need to be able to auger it out of those oak pipes without damaging them. The leather straps allow us to safely tan in the handler yard without risking the integrity of our original oaken infrastructure.
The little details make all the difference in a 145 year old tannery.

Natural latigo is definitely a sleeper within our offerings here at Hermann Oak!
We are all set up here in Waco for the Heart of Texas show presented by Leather Crafters Journal. We’ll be here today and tomorrow, with a little bit of everything so swing by and say hello!
Our traditional vegetable tannage prioritizes the natural characteristics of the leather, and this includes things like bug bites, fat wrinkles, etc. Knowing how to use these natural features gives crafters the ability to maximize yields and returns!
