Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad have accomplished something remarkably rare in entertainment: both sisters have maintained major professional careers for more than 5 decades — and both remain active today. The record was previously held at 47 years by actress Joan Collins and author Jackie Collins who died in 2015.

Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad’s careers stretch back to the early 1970s, with Rashad becoming a television and Broadway icon and Allen building an extraordinary résumé as an actress, dancer, choreographer, director and producer. Through the decades, both continued moving between television, film and theater rather than simply becoming celebrated figures of Hollywood’s past.

Both sisters have repeatedly credited much of their foundation to their mother, Vivian Ayers Allen, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet, artist and educator who raised her children with a deep appreciation for culture, creativity and the belief that their possibilities were limitless.

Now in their 70s, Debbie and Phylicia continue working and influencing new generations. While Hollywood has produced countless famous siblings, finding another pair who have both remained professionally active at this level for more than 45 years is extraordinarily difficult.

Nearly half a century later, Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad aren’t simply Hollywood legends — they’re still working, still creating and still carrying forward the remarkable legacy their mother helped begin.

Mary Eliza Mahoney made nursing history on this day in 1879.

After graduating from the New England Hospital for Women and Children, she became the first professionally trained Black nurse in the United States.

She later helped co-found the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, creating more support and recognition for Black nurses.
