This etiquette originated in Victorian England. Before paved streets and modern drainage, city roads were muddy, crowded with horses and wagons, and lined with open gutters. Men traditionally walked on the street side to shield women’s long dresses from splashes and the hazards of the road. The reason may have changed, but the gesture remains 🙌
