A laboratory study published in Cancer Biology & Therapy in February 2009 investigated whether fenugreek seeds, a commonly used culinary spice, might have anti-cancer effects. The researchers examined the impact of fenugreek seed extract on several types of human cancer cells grown in the laboratory.

In the study, prostate (DU-145, PC-3, LNCaP), breast (MCF-7, T47D, SKBR3, MDA-MB-231), and pancreatic cancer cell lines were treated with fenugreek seed extract and analyzed after 72 hours. The researchers observed a significant reduction in cancer cell growth compared to untreated cells. Further analysis showed an increase in the sub-G1 cell population, indicating cancer cell death, and in PC-3 prostate cancer cells, the extract also caused G2/M phase cell cycle arrest. These findings suggest that fenugreek seed extract both slows cancer cell growth and promotes cancer cell death under laboratory conditions.
