Such a beautiful session and she won’t see a line because we used a special color that softens as it wears while keeping the brass away with highlights that mimic her natural silver pattern.

This transformation can take 3+ hours depending on how much hair you have and if we choose a curly finish BUT the maintenance becomes quarterly highlights and lowlights after it’s complete.

I used to hate mirrors.

Not in some dramatic, I refuse to own one.

I just didn’t enjoy looking at myself.

I learned it pretty young.

I was the little girl with the curls.
The red hair.
The pale skin.
The freckles.

And I desperately wanted straight blonde hair like the other girls.

I wanted to look… normal.

I wanted to look like the girls people called pretty.

Because when you’re a little girl, you don’t really understand that beauty can look a thousand different ways.

You just see who gets noticed.

And I wasn’t her.

I wasn’t the girl the boys had crushes on. I wasn’t the girl everyone talked about being pretty.

Instead, I got teased.

My hair.
My curls.
My skin.
My freckles.

Little comments that probably meant absolutely nothing to the people saying them.

But little girls remember.

So eventually, I stopped expecting to like what I saw in the mirror.

I remember when I first started wearing makeup because I had these tiny little bumps of acne and I was terrified someone would tease me about those too.

I put the makeup on and looked at myself and thought…

Oh.

I look pretty.

I remember that feeling.

For once, I actually liked what I saw in the mirror.

And then I went to school.

And got made fun of for wearing too much makeup.

Of course. 😂

Then, as a young woman, I went to a hair salon.

I sat in the chair, looking at myself in that giant mirror . I was already uncomfortable because salon mirrors have absolutely NO mercy 😂 and the stylist looked at my hair and said:

“Your hair does nothing for you.”

I wanted to crawl under the chair.

I didn’t need someone to tell me that.

For years I had believed that something about the way God made me needed fixing.

My curls needed straightening.

My color needed changing.

My freckles needed covering.

My skin needed makeup.

Maybe if I changed enough little things, eventually I would become one of the pretty girls.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

I grew up.

I learned who I was.

And eventually I realized how many curly girls had their own version of this story.

Maybe nobody ever told them their hair “does nothing for them.”

Maybe they heard:

“It’s so frizzy.”

“You should straighten it.”

“Your hair is crazy.”

“Can I touch it?”

“Why don’t you brush it?”

Or maybe nobody said anything at all.

Maybe they just spent years looking around and rarely seeing someone who looked like them being called beautiful.

And suddenly my work became about so much more than hair.

I wanted the little girl inside of me to heal.

And I wanted to create a place where other women and girls could sit in front of a mirror without hearing a list of everything that was wrong with them.

I wanted them to hear:

Look at those curls.

Look at that texture.

Look at that color.

Look at YOU.

There you are.

Not a version of you we created.

Not you after we erased everything that made you different.

You.

That became a huge part of why I built Simply You to be a safe haven.

And the funny thing is…

Now I love mirrors.

I love my curls.

I love my freckles.

I love my pale skin.

I love the face looking back at me.

Not because I finally figured out how to make her perfect.

But because I know her now.

I know what she has survived.

I know how hard she works.

I know how fiercely she loves.

I know the grit and character it took to become her.

And grit is pretty.

Character is pretty.

Kindness is pretty.

Confidence is pretty.

Curls and freckles are pretty too.

When I look in the mirror now, I don’t search for everything I wish were different.

I just see beauty staring back at me.

And maybe that’s why I love what I do so much.

Because every once in a while, someone sits in my chair…

I turn them toward that same giant salon mirror…

and I get to watch them see it too. ❤️
