A great protective style should last, but it should also give you room to switch things up.
Two-strand twists offer the versatility to create different looks throughout the life of your style while helping you maintain your natural hair. If you’ve been thinking about trying twists, let this be your sign.
One of the hardest parts of our job is knowing when to say no.
We understand you’ve been looking forward to your appointment, but there are times when moving forward with a service could do more harm than good. We’ll always explain why and walk you through the next best step.
Our goal isn’t to tell you “no.” It’s to help you make the best decision for your hair and scalp, even if that means adjusting the plan. We know it can be disappointing in the moment, but we’d rather be honest with you than recommend something we don’t believe is in your best interest.
If you’ve been looking for a natural hair salon that specializes in textured hair, this is your sign to book.
Every appointment is built around you. We take the time to understand what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and create a style you’ll be excited to wear. If you’re ready for your next appointment, we’d love to see you in our chair.
One of the questions we hear most often is, “Can every hair texture get microlocs?”
The answer is that most natural hair textures can start a microloc journey, but not every texture will have the same experience.
Microlocs tend to be best suited for kinkier, coarser hair textures because the natural curl pattern helps the hair lock more easily. Looser curl patterns can absolutely wear microlocs too, but they may take longer to mature and often require more maintenance and patience throughout the locking process.
Your curl pattern is only one part of the equation. We also consider your hair density, strand size, overall hair health, and your willingness to stay consistent with maintenance. Those factors all play a role in determining whether microlocs are the right fit for you.
It’s also important to remember that no two microloc journeys look the same. Comparing your hair to someone else’s can lead to unrealistic expectations because everyone’s hair locks at its own pace.
During your consultation, we’ll take the time to assess your hair, answer your questions, and talk through what you can realistically expect. If microlocs are a good fit, we’ll create a plan that supports your journey. If another option would better suit your hair, we’ll be honest about that too.
Our goal isn’t to recommend the same service for everyone. It’s to help you choose the one that’s going to work best for your hair in the long run.

Microlocs are one of the most versatile natural hairstyles, but they’re also one of the biggest commitments you can make for your hair. Before starting your journey, it’s important to understand not only what microlocs are, but what it takes to maintain them over time.
Microlocs are created using very small, uniform sections that eventually mature into fully locked hair. Because they’re smaller than traditional locs, they offer a lot of styling flexibility while still giving you the freedom that comes with wearing locs. Like any loc journey, though, they require patience. Your locs will go through several stages as they mature, and every person’s timeline will look a little different.
Consistency is one of the biggest factors in a successful microloc journey. During the first year, regular maintenance appointments help keep your parts clean, prevent your locs from marrying together at the roots, and create a strong foundation as your locs begin to mature.
If you’re curious about microlocs or wondering if they’re the right fit for you, we invite you to join Micole for The World of Microlocs, a free virtual class on Sunday, July 12 at 5 PM. She’ll cover the different stages of the journey, maintenance expectations, who microlocs are best suited for, and answer your questions live.
The class is free, but spots are limited. Visit the link in our bio to reserve your spot. We hope to see you there!
If you caught yourself relating to any of these, this might be your sign to save this post.
We know finding a new salon can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trusting someone with your natural hair. That’s why we focus on more than just the service itself. We want you to leave understanding your hair a little better than when you walked in.
If you’ve been looking for a natural hair salon in Silver Spring that specializes in textured hair care, we’d love to meet you when you’re ready.

Hot take: Box braids and knotless braids aren’t automatically protective styles.
A style only becomes protective when it’s installed and maintained in a way that protects your hair. If your braids are installed too tightly, your edges are under constant tension, or your hair isn’t cared for underneath, that “protective style” can end up causing more damage than protection.
Another thing people don’t talk about enough is the hair that’s being installed. Some people have sensitivities to synthetic braiding hair or the coating that’s on it, which can lead to itching, irritation, or discomfort. Our team is trained to look for those signs and have those conversations with you. Synthetic hair works well for many people, but if it doesn’t work for you, we can recommend alternative hair options that may be a better fit.
At N, healthy hair is always the priority. That means we won’t braid your edges so tightly that they’re pulling at your scalp, and we’ll give you the guidance you need to care for your hair long after you leave the salon.

If your protective style leaves you with headaches, soreness, or a tender scalp, that’s not something you should have to expect.
At N, we believe a well-executed braided style should feel just as good as it looks. Our stylists prioritize low-tension techniques that help protect your hairline, support your scalp, and keep your hair healthy throughout the life of your style.
