Traction alopecia is one of the most common and most misunderstood causes of hair loss in Black women. And it is almost entirely caused by something avoidable.
Years of tight braids, weaves, extensions, and ponytails pull constantly at the hairline and edges. Over time that tension damages the follicle. The damage builds gradually, which is why most people do not notice how far it has progressed until the edges are already gone.
Here is what the three stages actually look like.
