"Every Child Matters" is the core message of Orange Shirt Day, a movement rooted in the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a survivor of the residential school system. Webstad wore an orange shirt—a gift from her grandmother—on her first day at St. Joseph's Mission Residential School in 1976, but the garment was confiscated by a teacher and never returned.
The movement was established in 2013 to honor survivors, remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, and foster reconciliation. In 2021, the Government of Canada officially designated September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed in conjunction with Orange Shirt Day.
Each year, thousands of people across Canada and in other countries wear orange to show their support, participating in events, online lessons, and gatherings at schools, universities, and within their communities. For 2026, the Orange Shirt Society has announced the first major "Every Child Matters" graduation event at BC Place in Vancouver, intended for over 20,000 Grade 12 students from British Columbia.

The wind still moves across the distant plains,
While the endless sky embraces him again.
Where are the ancestors? Perhaps within the breeze,
Within every heartbeat, within the sacred earth beneath.

And as he walks toward tomorrow's light,
His roots walk with him, forever by his side.
