How can immigrants succeed in the US without losing their identity?
When I moved to the United States, I quickly learned that working hard was not enough.
I also had to understand American communication styles, workplace culture, and the unwritten social rules that influence how people perceive your confidence, credibility, and value.

These are the three things that helped me succeed as an immigrant in the US:
I observed communication patterns.
I paid attention to how successful professionals started conversations, built rapport, presented their ideas, and structured information.
I noticed that people often led with the main point, organized their thoughts into three clear ideas, and used genuine compliments to create connection.
I learned that having a strong idea is not enough. You also need to communicate it in a way people can easily understand and remember.
I studied how to build relationships.
I devoured How to Win Friends and Influence People because I wanted to understand how people create trust and connection.
I learned to become genuinely curious about others, ask better questions, remember what mattered to them, and make people feel seen.
Professional success is not only about proving your value.
It is also about learning how to connect with the people around you.
I learned to read the room.
I became more aware of my volume, pace, directness, facial expressions, and external reactions.
I also improved my pronunciation, accent clarity, and professional communication skills.
My goal was never to erase my Brazilian accent or become less of myself.
My goal was to make sure people could clearly understand my ideas and recognize the value I brought into the room.
That distinction matters.
Adapting your communication does not mean abandoning your authenticity.
You can understand the culture, adjust your delivery, and remain completely connected to who you are.
Learn the room.
Translate your value.
Keep your identity.

I used to believe I wasn’t enough.
