Tonight, I watched a Hedda Gabler without a Hedda Gabler.

Katie Holmes bases her performance largely on physical gestures. They are clearly calculated with precision, but they never feel as though they emerge from the character’s inner conflict. Throughout the play, Hedda seems entirely devoid of inner tension or psychological struggle, and Holmes appears to have no real intention of filling that void. As a result, even when she comes out for the curtain call, there isn’t the slightest trace of exhaustion on her—unlike the others.

I did appreciate that the adaptation remained faithful to the original. The direction is also very successful and clean. Barry Edelstein’s staging is simple, the set minimal, and the overall approach gives the actors space to inhabit the work.
