Candi didn’t have breast cancer. She made life-changing decisions because she knew just how possible it was.

After watching her aunt face multiple cancers, Candi learned that her mom was BRCA1 positive. Then she found out she was, too.

That knowledge came with choices most people will never have to make.

A preventative mastectomy. Reconstruction. And now, plans for a preventative hysterectomy—another decision carrying its own physical and emotional weight.

And then come the comments:

“It’s basically a free b**b job.”
“A free tummy tuck.”
“But she never even had cancer… why is she included?”

Being a previvor doesn’t mean you got the easy version of this story.

It means living with risk before a diagnosis ever comes. It means making decisions about your breasts, your reproductive organs, your body, and your future because of what could happen. It means grieving things you’re choosing to lose in hopes of protecting the life ahead of you.

During National Hereditary Cancer Week, we’re making space for stories like Candi’s—because there is so much more to hereditary cancer risk than a positive genetic test.

Hear Candi tell it in her own words.

It's National Hereditary Cancer Week, and it feels like the right time to start telling you Candi's story.

She watched an aunt she loved live through cancer for years. Then her mom tested BRCA1+. And Candi did, too.

What followed was a year of processing, weighing risk, and ultimately making a decision about her body and her future: a preventative double mastectomy with reconstruction.

She knew why she was doing it, but that didn't make it easy.

And it didn't stop the comments.
"You never actually had cancer."
"At least you got a free b**b job and tummy tuck."

But preventative surgery isn't a freebie. And reducing your risk before a diagnosis doesn't mean the experience leaves you unchanged.

In Candi's words:
"Saving my life is what I did."

Swipe to meet Candi. 👉

You know the ribbon. You know what it represents.
But do you know the woman behind it?

The woman who lived through the diagnosis.
The surgeries. The scars. The fear. The things cancer took that no one else could see.

This October, we’re asking you to look beyond the pink.

Beyond the patient.
Beyond the survivor.
Beyond the word inspiring.

Because surviving breast cancer is part of her story.

It is not the entirety of who she is.

Step Into Her Reality.

Is it too early for b**b pumpkins? Asking for a friend…

October is coming—which means you’re about to see a whole lot of pink.

But breast awareness shouldn’t be something we remember for 31 days and forget for the other 334.

One of the simplest things you can do is get familiar with your own body. Know what’s normal for you. Pay attention when something changes. And make checking in with your breasts a habit—not an October tradition.

Once a month. Every month. All year long.

So yes, we’re bringing out the b**b pumpkins early. 🎃🎃

Consider this your reminder to feel it on the first. 🙌
