Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in brain health, nervous system function, and protection against oxidative stress. It helps protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals and supports the production and regulation of neurotransmitters, including dopamine, which is involved in movement, motivation, and behavior.

Researchers have explored whether vitamin C supplementation could help improve certain symptoms associated with autism, particularly difficulties involving sensory processing, motor coordination, and behavior.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry, investigated the effects of vitamin C in 18 children with autism over 30 weeks. Participants received a high dose of 8,000 mg of vitamin C per 70 kg of body weight daily, adjusted according to their weight.

The study included three treatment phases lasting 10 weeks each, with researchers assessing behavior every week using the Ritvo-Freeman rating scale. Results showed statistically significant improvements in overall autism symptom scores and sensory-motor scores during vitamin C treatment compared with placebo. Researchers suggested that these improvements might be related to vitamin C's role in dopamine regulation.
