Who We Are

A Utah Business Network Pioneer
The MountainWest Capital Network enjoys a unique position as the original, independent business networking group in Utah. For more than two-and-a-half decades, we have supported entrepreneurs, investors and allied professional services firms with real-time information about capital creation and distribution through sponsored events that inspire, stimulate and reward successful business performance as they build relationships. The Deal
Capital flow is our mission; rewarding business performance is our passion. Through our core events, MWCN members share their knowledge and donate their talents to serve the economic self-interests of themselves and fellow members. These events require an enormous amount of energy, time, skill and teamwork to organize and implement, and are performed by our members without compensation. Our Focus for the Future
Today's environment for business growth has changed radically since the MountainWest Capital Network (originally the MountainWest Venture Group) was founded in 1983, and still offers unprecedented opportunity. Our focus is to offer a unique synergy of intellectual, financial and entrepreneurial capital. We help our members meet and master business challenges through relevant events, education and networking.

Ten years on the Utah 100 takes more than one good market. It takes a habit of growth.

These five companies come from five completely different industries, and every one of them is back on the list in 2026 after nine prior appearances:

Becklar
Design Imaging
G&A Partners
Legacy Tree Genealogists, Inc.
Young Automotive Group

Their markets are different, but they share the same habit: keep growing.

We'll celebrate them at the Utah 100 Awards on Friday, November 13th, in the Grand Ballroom at the Grand America Hotel.

Four generations in, you’d expect a family business to have a playbook for everything.

Oliver Young, Innovation Director, and Spencer Young II., President of Young Automotive Group, tell Cheri M. Waldron and Jason Roberts on Welcome to Winners’ Circle that every generation has had to reset the business and put its own mark on it. It has never been easy, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Their honest answer to whether they have it all figured out, no. And neither does anyone else. Every day is a pivot.

A young dealer, newly in charge of the family business, gets asked what matters most. His answer: capital.

Spencer Young II, President of Young Automotive Group, shares with Cheri M. Waldron and Jason Roberts on Welcome to the Winners’ Circle how his dad's view changed over the years. You can always find a way to figure out the capital. You have to have the people.

Spence watched it play out across more than 30 stores, change one leader, and a store goes from losing money to making money.

One store. One customer. A car sitting on the family’s own lot across town, and the answer was still no.

Oliver Young, Innovation Director of Young Automotive Group, tells Cheri M. Waldron and Jason Roberts on Welcome to the Winners’ Circle that for years, every store guarded its own inventory and its own people. The one who lost out was the customer.

So they changed it. Today, any salesperson at any Young store can offer roughly 1,200 used vehicles instead of the 50 on their own lot.

🎙New episode is live!

Spencer Young II., President, and Oliver Young, Innovation Director, of Young Automotive Group, join Cheri M. Waldron and Jason Roberts on Welcome to the Winners’ Circle to share the story behind a Utah family business that just passed its 100th year.

Both grew up on the lot washing cars, changing oil, and pulling weeds. In this episode, they talk through surviving 2008 when GM and Chrysler both went bankrupt, the culture card that broke down the walls between their stores, why the family turned down offers to sell, and how Young Caring for Our Young now helps feed 25,000 to 30,000 kids every year.

A candid, generous conversation about building something meant to last another hundred years.

🎙 This week on Welcome to the Winners’ Circle, Jason Roberts and Cheri M. Waldron sit down with Spencer Young II., President, and Oliver Young, Innovation Director of Young Automotive Group.

It started in 1924 with a technician fixing cars in a Morgan, Utah garage, who picked up an Oldsmobile franchise and drove his tow truck around town until he sold a car. A hundred years and four generations later, Spence and Oliver have helped grow the family business from five stores to more than 30 across Utah, Idaho, and Montana.

This is a real, funny conversation about family culture, and what it takes to beat the odds that only 3 to 5 percent of family businesses make it to the fourth generation.

Joel Racker, Audit Partner at Richey May Utah, makes the case that Qualified Small Business Stock benefits are no longer something founders and investors can secure at formation and set aside.

In his Deal Flow article, Joel walks through how the current deal environment has changed the math. Partial liquidity events, recapitalizations, rollover equity, and deeper tax diligence can all affect QSBS treatment in ways that aren't obvious when a transaction is first on the table.
He breaks it down into four deal decisions that shape QSBS outcomes, from stock versus asset structure to the timing of secondaries and redemptions. His bottom line for founders, investors, and their advisors: tax outcomes are now shaped by ex*****on, not intent, and the flexibility to protect them often disappears by the time an LOI is on the table.
