My son isn’t super sporty.
He isn’t likely to be the star of any sports team.
He enjoys playing video games and has to be coaxed into going outside to play.
He is smart and gets good grades, but may not be at the top of his class.

And I am okay with that.

Because he is kind. He is thoughtful. And he cares about the needs of others.

Today, I received an email letting me know he was nominated to participate in the elementary school’s Inspire Crew Program.

The email stated, “The purpose of the program is to provide elementary-age students with training and information on how to help build a positive and caring culture at school.”

The kids will meet to talk about: promoting inclusivity, noticing when a friend is feeling emotional, supporting a friend, practicing self care, being respectful of others, putting yourself in another person’s shoes, and how to report if you feel a friend needs help.

When I read this email, my heart was overwhelmed.

I am so grateful a program like this exists at the elementary level.
I kind of wish I could attend a program like this myself. We need more programs like the Inspire program for all ages.

Today, I was reminded once again that not every kid is going to be a star student or a star athlete or the best at something, and that’s okay.

It’s okay to be average.
It’s okay to not be the first or the best or the strongest or the fastest.
It’s okay to not participate in all the clubs or activities or sports.

What matters is that you are kind.
Always kind.

And I am so grateful that caring for others is not only being recognized, but also encouraged, taught and supported. I am so grateful my son will get to learn more about the importance of these things and I pray he will take the things he learns to heart and that kindness will be something he values, and shares with others, for all of his days.
