What Message is Pain Sending about your Body? 08/03/2026

Why the Pain Isn't Always the Problem

"It hurts right here."

As a massage therapist, that's one of the first things I hear from clients. They point to their neck, shoulder, low back, hip, or knee and naturally assume that's where the problem lives.

But here's the interesting part:
the place you feel pain is often just the messenger.

Our bodies are incredible at adapting. When one muscle becomes weak, tight, injured, or simply isn't doing its job well, other muscles quietly step in to pick up the slack. This is called compensation.

At first, these compensations are helpful. They allow us to keep moving, exercising, working, and living our lives. But over weeks, months, or even years, those overworked muscles begin to fatigue. They tighten, become irritated, and eventually start sending pain signals.

The result? The muscle that's screaming at you may actually be the one that's been working the hardest, but not the one that caused the problem in the first place.

For example:

Neck pain may actually begin with stiff upper back muscles or weak shoulder stabilizers.
Shoulder pain can be influenced by limited mobility in the rib cage or upper spine.
Low back pain often develops because the hips, glutes, or core aren't sharing the workload.
Knee pain may stem from restrictions in the hips or ankles that change how you move.

Think of it like a team carrying a heavy couch. If one person stops helping, everyone else has to work harder. Eventually, the strongest person starts complaining—not because they were weak, but because they were doing everyone else's job.

This is why simply rubbing the painful spot doesn't always create lasting relief.

During a therapeutic massage, I'm always looking for these compensation patterns. I assess how muscles are working together, identify areas that are overworked, and address restrictions that may be contributing to the pain—even if they're not where you feel it.

Sometimes the answer is releasing tight muscles. Other times it's restoring movement to a different area so the painful muscle can finally stop overcompensating.

Pain is your body's way of asking for attention. But listening to why it's speaking is just as important as listening to where it's hurts.

If you've been treating the same sore spot over and over without lasting relief, it may be time to look beyond the symptom and uncover the true source of the problem.

Your body works as one connected system—and when we treat it that way, lasting relief becomes much more achievable.

Wishing you much health, healing, & joy,

Jess

I try to keep things uplifting on here, but sometimes you gotta just call the cops!😳😥

I almost missed this.

Today was busy, rushing from one thing to another, dropping kids off, running errands, discovering plumbing issues, just busy life.

As we were heading out the door to pick the big kids back up, my 7yr old suddenly screamed, “MOM! Look at this sunset! It’s AMAZING!!! Quick, take a picture!”

I’ll admit, I almost didn’t even look. My mind was already racing to where we were headed, the chores I needed to do later, the business work I wanted to do before bed, & on into all I planned to do tomorrow.

But something made me listen to my baby, stop, look up, & take a minute to appreciate this amazing moment. I didn’t think the picture would turn out, but he insisted I take it, & I was so pleasantly surprised at what I was able to capture.

Life will always be busy & my mind will always find things to preoccupy it. But that moment, stopping & glorying in God’s handiwork with my little one, seeing the splendor around me through his eyes, will never come again. And the years in which he will still find the routine marvelous & want to share it with his Mommy will all too swiftly pass me by.

So I’m grateful for today’s magnificent sunset & the precious moment it gave me to share with my little man. I’m so thankful I chose to look up.

I wish everyone who walked through my door knew these 3 things!

1. Deep tissue DOES NOT equal pain!

I do very deep work that gets great therapeutic results, but I firmly believe it should not hurt. Although painful massages can give a temporary analgesic effect, it rarely addresses the root of the problem & why that painful knot formed in the first place.

It’s much better to work with the body rather than fight it & send your nervous system into “fight or flight” mode, which leads me to…

2. Massage is much more about your nervous system than your muscles.

Yes, it’s your muscles that get tight, painful, & knotted up, but it’s your nervous system telling it to do so. The nervous system is what sends all the input from your body to your brain & directions from your brain back out to every area of your body. If it is threatened (real or perceived), it’s going to “lock down” into what it feels are safe patterns to prevent you from getting injured.

Massage helps to lower the stress hormone cortisol, telling the brain the threat has passed & then through slow, steady, sustained holds, we can retrain the nervous system to let go & open up to better, more mobile patterns, reducing the strain on your muscles.

3. And finally, I wish you knew that no one lives perfectly aligned, pain-free, all of the time.

Clients come in & the first words out of their mouth are they’ve done wrong & things they should be doing, but aren’t. Everyone is so full of guilt for not living in their bodies perfectly.

We are all doing the best we can, with the knowledge, the body, the time, & the circumstances we’ve been given.

Can we do better? Always. But does that mean we are an utter failure & deserve the pain we are suffering with? Absolutely not.

But you are also not unique to be struggling with pain & restrictions. Every one of us, from top athletes, to doctors, to coaches, & yes, even massage therapists, experience these things. Even when doing “everything right”.

So give yourself a little grace, a little love, & acknowledge that you are doing the best you can & Lord willing, you’ll do a little better tomorrow.
