A little reshaping, a little weight removal, and a whole lot of intention.

We refined the perimeter, brought movement back through the shape, and added soft face-framing layers that fall naturally into place — giving her hair more body and movement without sacrificing that beautiful length.

The kind of cut that looks polished when styled, but doesn’t demand a 45-minute routine every morning.

For this model transformation, McKayla created ribbons of vivid magenta and plum against a deep, dimensional base—placed intentionally so the color changes depending on how the hair moves.

And this is exactly why we do model sessions.
They give our artists space to experiment, refine their craft, create something a little outside the everyday, and build the kind of work they want to see more of behind their chair.

McKayla has been especially drawn toward alternative color, bold placement, and looks that still feel wearable once you leave the salon.

There’s more than hair tucked away inside Black Fern. 🌿

This old trunk has become our drop-off — a little corner of the salon dedicated to taking care of our community.

If you have clothing, supplies, or other useful items to share, you’re welcome to bring them by Black Fern and add them to the trunk. From here, donations make their way to Family Soup Mutual Aid and back into the hands of our neighbors.

We’ve always believed that a salon can be more than a place you come to get your hair done.

It can be a place where you feel welcome.
A place where resources are shared.
A place where we look out for each other.

Scalp care is hair care.

We spend so much time thinking about what we put on our lengths and ends that it’s easy to forget where healthy hair begins.

Over time, oil, dry skin, styling products and environmental buildup can collect on the scalp — leaving it feeling heavy, flaky, irritated or simply in need of a reset.

Our Detox Ritual was created to give the scalp a little more attention.

We begin with a dry scalp exfoliation to gently loosen buildup and encourage circulation, followed by a clarifying cleanse to remove what has accumulated on the hair and scalp. A balancing treatment restores moisture afterward before we finish with a blowout and style.

It isn't about stripping everything away.

It's about creating a clean, balanced foundation for the hair you're caring for.

As we age, our hair changes with us. Texture shifts. Density changes. Silver begins to weave its way through. Styles we’ve worn for decades may evolve—or sometimes, we keep them simply because they still make us feel like ourselves.
And we think there’s something beautiful about all of it.

Self-care was never meant to be reserved for youth. It isn’t always about transformation, anti-aging, or trying to turn back the clock. Sometimes it’s sitting beneath a roller set. Sometimes it’s having your hair washed by someone else. Sometimes it’s leaving the salon feeling polished, cared for, and a little more like yourself.

Growing older is not the opposite of beauty.
It is another way of becoming.

Three years behind the chair, and McKayla still makes time to pull out a mannequin and practice.

Because becoming a great stylist isn’t about reaching a point where you suddenly know everything. It’s about staying curious.

Trying a different placement. Refining your technique. Working on your timing. Revisiting the fundamentals. Giving yourself room to experiment without the pressure of creating a finished look for a guest.

At Black Fern, we want education to be part of the everyday—not something reserved for newer artists or the occasional class.

Our Studio Stylists are already trained professionals. They’re artists who are continuing to build their craft, develop their specialties, and discover exactly what kind of stylist they want to become.

Practice isn’t proof that you don’t know enough.
It’s proof that you care about getting better.
