This isn’t a post to make anyone feel bad about cancelling an appointment. Life happens, and I completely understand that.

It’s just something I wish more people knew about small service businesses.

When you cancel a last minute appointment, you’re not just cancelling a time on a calendar. For many small business owners, that’s an hour (or more) of income that we can’t get back or replace.

And yet, we’re very accustomed to cancellation fees from larger businesses. Hotels, airlines, rental cars, doctors’ offices, event tickets…we understand that our reservation has value.

But when a small business has a cancellation policy, sometimes it can feel more personal.

It isn’t.

It’s simply a way for a small business owner to protect the time that their business depends on.

And to my fellow small business owners who have been scared to implement or enforce a cancellation policy because you don’t want to upset anyone:

You are allowed to have boundaries.

You can be compassionate.
You can make exceptions when appropriate.
You can care deeply about your clients.
And you can still protect your business.

Being a small business doesn’t mean your time is worth less. 🫶🏼
