Most extension hair comes to us in bulk, which gives us the ability to build each set specifically for the person wearing it.
For this client, Ashley is taking three different groups of hair, blending the colors together, and rebuilding them into new strips so the final result has the same dimension, highlights, lowlights, and variation you would expect from natural hair.
This is also one of the reasons we keep such a large inventory in the salon. A ponytail or blend that was originally customized for one client can often be reworked and combined with other hair to create something completely different for someone else.
You might not match one bundle sitting on our shelf, but you may be the perfect combination of three of them. Custom extensions aren’t about finding hair that’s “close enough.” It’s about creating the blend that belongs on you.
This client traveled from out of state and wanted to go longer, lighter, and still have a texture match she could air dry.
She came in the day before her appointment to be matched, which meant we had less than 24 hours to prep and customize everything for her install.
We created the look of a lighter balayage through the extensions, without having to chemically lighten her natural hair.
Because we keep a large hair inventory in the salon and customize our hair in-house, we can pull off transformations like this even on a very tight timeline.
Her review? “10 out of 10. 20 out of 10. 100% recommend.”
She just left her consultation and comes back tomorrow for her install. Technically we have 24 hours, but realistically we have about 7 to custom color, blend, bond, and prep all of her hair from scratch. Nothing on our wall was quite right, so we’re making exactly what she needs. Tomorrow, Ashley installs.
Curly extensions should look like your curls, not like extensions.
The priority is finding hair that blends naturally, creating a custom color match, and giving her a result that feels like her own hair finally grew past the length it’s been stuck at for years.
Follow along to see the final transformation.
Six different blends for one head of hair? Probably a little excessive.
But when you’re trying to create something that looks soft and natural, the details matter. Instead of stacking colors next to each other and creating stripes, we blend them together so they actually melt into the client’s hair.
Even with a longtime client, we still customize every appointment. Her hair changes, her goals change, and what worked last time might not be exactly what she wants this time.
I recently trained with Candice Motley | Growth Coach + Salon Owner | Hair Replacement from CONFIDENCE WITH CROWNS in Raleigh, learning more about mesh + meshless integration.
We’ve been K-Tip exclusive for a long time, but the reality is that not everyone with thinning or hair loss is a good candidate for extensions.
So we’re expanding.
I’m really excited to start offering more solutions! If you would like more information, send us a message.
Ponytail of the week 🤎
This is a 50cm virgin deep wave ponytail weighing 156 grams.
You can see the ends are naturally lighter than the root from sun exposure, but the hair is still completely virgin and has never been chemically processed.
The texture, natural variation in color, and softness on this one are so beautiful. This is exactly why I love working with single-donor hair.
Sometimes the best extension match isn’t about finding one perfect shade. It’s about thinking ahead to how the client’s natural hair is going to change.
Her hair naturally fades lighter between appointments, so instead of matching the extensions only to the color she had that day, we toned the extension hair to mimic the same color process we used on her natural hair. The goal is that as her hair fades, the extensions fade with it instead of slowly becoming two completely different colors.
This is the kind of customization that happens before a single K-Tip is installed. The finished result matters, but so does how it’s going to look weeks from now.
When you’re working with bulk hair, removing short hairs is all about balance.
Every natural ponytail has shorter hairs throughout it, which is why longer lengths naturally become wispier toward the ends.
Depending on the final length we’re trying to create, we may need to remove more short hairs, but I’d rather start conservatively and go back in if needed than remove too much too soon.
Once that hair is gone, you can’t put it back. Understanding how to refine a ponytail without sacrificing unnecessary density is a huge part of working with bulk hair.
We’re celebrating Ashley Fay officially completing her training. She came to us with 8+ years behind the chair and experience in both color and extensions, and over the last year she’s worked through just about everything we could throw at her: pixies, bobs, curly hair, straight hair, wavy hair, highlights, major transformations, K-Tips, and hair loss solutions.
One of my favorite things about extensions is how much we can manipulate someone’s natural texture, density, length and shape to get them closer to their goal hair. At this point, Ashley is officially taking clients of her own, so giving someone a completely free transformation felt like the perfect way to celebrate.
