That phrase is a business model and a vulnerability at the same time.

An open door means anyone can come in — the client who becomes a regular for ten years, and the person who takes a bag while nobody is looking. It means my card reader is exposed to whoever touches it. It means the fraud that starts somewhere else can end up on my books.

Big companies have security teams for this. I have a door, my judgment, and whatever technology I can afford.

When people design systems for "businesses," they picture a company with a security department. Most businesses in this country are a door and a person.

Someone built an Instagram account pretending to be my studio.

Same style of photos. Similar name. My work — my actual work, years of it — presented as theirs. Clients messaged them thinking they were messaging me.

Here is the part that should bother everyone: the platform's systems could not tell the difference. Ten years of real work on one account. A stranger with stolen photos on the other. To the algorithm, both were just accounts.

A machine with knowledge and no conscience does not protect the person who built something. It processes whoever shows up.

I did not lose a following. I lost clients who thought they had reached me and never did. I will never know how many.

The line is almost 500 years old.

François Rabelais published it in 1532 — a father writing to his son about education. He tells him to learn everything: languages, geometry, astronomy, the natural world. Learn it all.

And then the warning: "science sans conscience n'est que ruine de l'âme." Knowledge without conscience is only the ruin of the soul.

Notice he does not say stop learning. He says knowledge without conscience destroys you. The problem is never the knowing. The problem is knowing without a moral spine to carry it.

Five centuries later we built machines that know almost everything and have no spine at all. We supply the spine, or nobody does.

I run a braiding studio in West Philadelphia. Open door, walk-ins welcome. I also hold an AI consulting certification. Those two facts are not separate.

Here's what the tech world forgets: the smallest businesses carry the heaviest load when technology has no conscience. Fake accounts impersonating my studio. Bots filling my booking calendar with appointments no human made. A broken security certificate quietly telling every client "attackers may be trying to steal your information" — while I sat wondering why the bookings had stopped.

I use AI every day. I'm not against the machine. I'm against the machine without the human conscience.
