Soap Myth: Let’s Talk Bubbles 🧼

Good morning! ☀️

It is time to bust another soap myth:
“The more bubbles a soap produces, the better it cleans.”

What do you think, true or false? Make your guess before reading the answer! 🤔👇

The answer is false! 🫧

Do not get me wrong, a fluffy cloud of bubbles is fun. There is something wonderfully satisfying about working up a big, bubbly lather!

But bubbles are not what determine how well a soap cleans.

Soap cleans because its molecules help lift oil and grime from the skin so they can be rinsed away with water. The size and amount of the bubbles mostly tell us about the type of lather the formula creates.

If you have been following our Soap Nerd series, you already know that different oils and fats contribute different qualities to a bar. There may be a quiz later! 🧪

🫧 Some oils help produce big, fluffy bubbles.
✨ Others contribute a dense, creamy lather.
🌿 Some help create hardness, longevity, or a more balanced feel.

A thoughtfully formulated soap is not about producing the largest pile of bubbles possible. It is about balancing the ingredients to create a bar that cleans effectively, feels lovely to use, and lasts.

At Blueberry Fields, olive oil forms the foundation of my soap recipes. I carefully balance it with other oils and ingredients to create the lather and performance I want from each bar.

Now it is time to choose your team!

Sometimes I get asked, “Why don’t you just keep using it until the bottle is gone?”
Because I’m not just making one batch of soap. I’m building custom fragrances that I need to be able to duplicate.
When a fragrance oil supplier goes out of business, or a fragrance I use is discontinued, I try to remove that oil from my working fragrance library as quickly as possible.
Even if I still have some left.
Here’s why.
At Blueberry Fields, I increasingly use fragrance oils as building blocks. I may combine several of them in carefully tested percentages to create one of our own proprietary fragrance blends.
And once I create something I love, I want to be able to reproduce it.
If one component no longer exists, that becomes a problem.
I might have enough to make a beautiful batch today…but what happens when you fall in love with it and come back next season?
I can’t simply order another bottle.
And replacing it with something that has a similar name doesn’t necessarily work. Two suppliers can call a fragrance “Sandalwood,” “Vanilla,” or “Cedar,” and those oils can smell completely different. Change one component and the entire balance of a blend can change.
So when I learn that an oil has been discontinued, I make a decision:
Use it up in something where I don’t need long-term reproducibility, reformulate the blend while I still have the original for comparison, or retire it from my fragrance-development library.
It can be painful, especially when I really love an oil.
But this is part of the science behind what I do.
My fragrance cabinet isn’t simply a collection of scents I like.
It’s my formulation palette.
And if Blueberry Fields is going to create fragrances that are truly our own, that palette needs to contain materials I can reliably source, test and reproduce.
That’s how a fun fragrance experiment becomes a Blueberry Fields fragrance that I can make for you again. 🫐🌿

PS. Those fragrances that I can no longer purchase usually go in to our bath bombs.
