Trichophagia is a BFRB that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.
It’s when someone eats hair after pulling it, and it can happen alongside trichotillomania. For some people, it can feel automatic or happen during a BFRB trance, making it incredibly difficult to even realize it’s happening in the moment.
This isn’t about being weird, gross, or having a lack of self-control. It’s a body-focused repetitive behavior, and people living with it deserve understanding, not shame.
During BFRB Awareness Week, let’s talk about the behaviors that are often kept hidden. Awareness is the first step toward understanding and support.

Onychophagia, or chronic nail biting, is a body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB) that many people experience, but far too often it’s dismissed as “just a bad habit.”
For some, nail biting happens without even realizing it. It can show up during stress, boredom, concentration, or when you’re completely zoned out. And being told to “just stop” doesn’t make the urge disappear.
During BFRB Awareness Week, we’re talking about nail biting because understanding matters. BFRBs are not something to be ashamed of, and you are not alone.
Awareness is the first step. 💚💙

It’s BFRB Awareness Week, October 1–7, and we want to talk about trichotillomania.
Trichotillomania is more than “just pulling your hair.” It can happen without you even realizing it. It can happen when you’re stressed, bored, focused, tired, or completely lost in the moment. And for so many people, the shame that comes with it can be just as difficult as the pulling itself.
Awareness matters because you can’t understand what you’ve never heard of. So this week, let’s talk about BFRBs openly, without judgment or shame, and remind anyone living with trichotillomania that they are NOT weird, broken, or alone.
