WHY IS A FACIAL SPECIALIST DOING HAIR AND SCALP TREATMENTS?

I’m going to say something that may ruffle some feathers:

If you are performing comprehensive HEAD SPA services, I believe you should be a licensed cosmetologist with advanced education in scalp care.

Period.

A head spa is not simply a facial performed on the scalp.

You are working with HAIR AND SCALP.

You are cleansing the hair and scalp. You are applying and removing products. You are manipulating wet hair. You are assessing scalp conditions. You are choosing treatments based on what you see and feel. You may encounter chemically treated hair, extensions, compromised hair, irritated scalps, hair loss, lesions, infections, inflammatory conditions and situations that should be referred to a dermatologist or other medical professional.

That requires education.

And right now, Florida has a major gray area.

Florida defines cosmetology as the mechanical or chemical treatment of the head, face and scalp for aesthetic purposes, including hair shampooing and other hair services.

But Florida also allows a registered facial specialist to massage or treat the scalp with oils, creams, lotions and other preparations.

See the problem?

The modern HEAD SPA industry has grown far beyond the language our current regulations were written to address.

There is no specific Florida “head spa” license. There is no comprehensive head-spa-specific scope of practice. And there is no state-mandated advanced scalp education specifically designed for someone offering the full head spa experience.

I believe that needs to change.

My position is simple:

Comprehensive head spa services should fall under COSMETOLOGY.

The practitioner should be a licensed cosmetologist AND should complete additional education specifically in scalp and hair health, sanitation, contraindications, product chemistry, scalp analysis and knowing when something is outside our scope and needs to be referred to a medical professional.

Because a cosmetology license alone doesn't make someone a scalp specialist either.

HEADCARE deserves its own standard.

This isn't about keeping people out of an industry.

It's about defining the industry.

It's about education.
It's about scope of practice.
It's about sanitation.
It's about consumer safety.
And it's about protecting the integrity of a rapidly growing profession.

I own Bungalow Orlando: Therapeutic Headcare, and I have invested in advanced education in Japanese scalp therapy, trichoscopy and professional scalp and hair care because I believe the person touching your scalp and hair should actually understand BOTH.

My intention is not just to talk about this.

My intention is to help change it.

Florida needs a clearly defined standard for professional head spa services.

And I intend to advocate for one.
