She thought it was melasma, but not all facial pigmentation is melasma.
This patient came to Everyday Skin Clinic concerned about progressive darkening along the sides of her face. After a clinical evaluation, her pigmentation appeared more consistent with lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP), a chronic inflammatory pigment condition seen more commonly in melanin-rich skin.
Because LPP can be persistent and UV exposure may worsen it, treatment requires more than simply trying to lighten dark spots. We combined the ESC Pigment Regeneration Protocol with customized home care to manage the pigmentation, support her skin barrier and protect against UV exposure.
