The revision removed language that previously exempted livestock grazing lands from disposal—meaning that areas currently under active grazing permits may now be sold off as well. This change could increase the lands eligible for privatization from 120 million acres to as many as 258 million acres, according to recent reporting. It’s also important to remember: this is still just a proposal. Nothing is final. The bill has a long road ahead—and we must keep fighting to stop it. We will have an updated interactive map to show these lands on June 19.*** --- Western Watersheds Project has unveiled a new interactive map showing the staggering scope of U.S. public lands that could be sold off under the Senate’s proposed budget bill. Up to 3.18 million acres of Forest Service and BLM lands are on the chopping block—across eleven Western states. The bill’s language is clear: no exclusions for roadless areas, wildlife corridors, tribal cultural sites, or ecologically sensitive landscapes. These aren’t “barren lands,” as Interior Secretary Doug Burgum would have you believe. The map includes: – Parcels in the Boise Foothills – Backcountry ski terrain in Colorado – Forest Service lands near Sedona – Riverfront lands outside Canyonlands – Trail networks near Pikes Peak – Sacred sites in the Klamath River watershed – Slopes of Mount Hood and Icicle Creek Valley in Washington And much more. The only state exempt? Montana—raising serious questions of political favoritism. This bill is not about affordable housing. It’s a public land giveaway, plain and simple. It hands first rights to states and counties—but not Tribal Nations with ancestral ties to these landscapes.
