Let’s discuss cancellation fees, which seem particularly unfair when applied to hair appointments.

Consider this scenario: you bought a concert ticket and forgot to attend or something unexpected came up. The venue won’t refund your money, and your seat remains reserved regardless of your presence.

Similarly, if you reserved a hotel room but didn’t show up, the venue will charge your card because they reserved the room for you.

Imagine missing your flight and the plane leaving. The airline won’t refund your money, and your seat will be charged.

Now, consider paying for a gym membership but only showing up twice in a month. The gym won’t reimburse you for the remaining 28 days.

Think about registering for a class and not showing up. That spot could have gone to someone else, but it was reserved for you.

Does this sound familiar?

Now, let’s apply this to salons.

You reserve a two-hour slot for your color appointment, which is specifically reserved for you. When you cancel last minute or don’t show up, the stylist can’t reschedule those hours for someone else.

The key point is that cancellation fees aren’t a charge for doing nothing. They’re a reservation with that stylist that no one else can fill.

We understand that emergencies and unexpected events happen. Life happens.

However, the bills and expenses of a business don’t disappear because someone forgot their appointment.

Cancellation policies are in place to protect the business, not to be personal.

That said, I believe it’s up to each salon to decide what their cancellation policy should be.

Personally, I allow grace periods, but for recurring and inconsiderate cancellations, there’s a policy to ensure my business can continue to thrive.
