Why do former employees return to Basic Research? Drew K. shares what brought him back to BR... and we may or may not be crying...

"My name is Drew Kacey. I worked at Basic Research from the time I was 20 until just before my 25th birthday. It was the first job I had ever taken where I felt truly looked after and cared for, not only by my direct supervisor but by upper management and ownership as well.

During my first five years here, I had a medical condition I was dealing with that required multiple surgeries over a few years and unfortunately my brother and grandmother also passed away. That can be a lot to deal with but something I have been forever grateful for is that Basic made sure I was able to stay employed and that I did not have to worry about losing my job while dealing with these life circumstances.

Also, I had decided to seek further education and the company reimbursed me for over 30 credits that I took from the community college during my first stint here. Of course, top performance and adhering to certain policies was/is always a must here but the resources to be successful are consistently and abundantly provided.

In 2022, I left to explore some other avenues in Arizona but when I moved back home to Utah at the end of 2023, I knew that this was the only place I wanted to be. These days I think it is really common for employers to simply look at their employees as numbers and figures instead of as full human beings with lives outside of work. That is not the case at Basic.

From the CEO to HR to my managers, I know I am valued by them because they frequently make the time to express their gratitude towards myself and my coworkers...

Levi Selway, Technical Product Manager in our R&D department by day, and an award-winning, Florence Academy-trained sculptor at night.

We are so happy to share that Levi's art sculpture, called "Her Perfect 10" was selected by The Art Around the Corner Foundation to be publicly featured on St. George, Utah's historic main street. The Art Around the Corner Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the arts, enriching the community, and bringing fine arts to the heart of historic St. George.

ABOUT LEVI

Levi's contemporary work is informed by his culturally rich and unique artistic journey: He was raised near London, trained in Italy, and worked in studios in Paris and Nice. His work has been exhibited in museums and fine art shows across the western US, and is part of private collections in both Europe and North America. Levi’s work has garnered widespread praise for his unique style of raw fluidity. He continues to celebrate the empowering, universal theme of “Triumph: A Life Well Lived.”

ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

Taking around 200 hours to complete, this piece is called "Her Perfect 10", inspired by Romanian gymnast, Nadia Comăneci. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, QC, an unknown 14-year-old girl from Romania set the sporting world ablaze when she was awarded the first-ever perfect 10s for several flawless performances, including her routine on the balance beam that inspired this work. Through her artistry, fearlessness and sheer brilliance, Nadia Comăneci captured hearts the world over and inspired an entire generation of gymnasts and fans. Balance and harmony are critical in both gymnastics and art. A beautiful composition requires a careful consideration of geometric shapes and numbers. This composition is coupled with a symbolic celebration of the Olympic podium and medals (gold, silver and bronze), illustrating that there are several shapes that come in 3s.
