For many women, surviving breast cancer is only one part of an incredibly personal journey.

Breast reconstruction can play an important role for some patients after breast cancer surgery, but there is no single right choice.

Some women pursue reconstruction.
Some choose revision surgery later.
Some decide against additional surgery altogether.
What matters is having understandable information, realistic expectations, and a treatment plan built around the individual patient.

This October, we celebrate survivors, support those currently fighting, remember those we have lost, and recognize that every reconstruction journey is deeply personal.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, informed choices always matter.

If You Want Something 100% Gone, Cosmetic Surgery May Not Be the Right Choice

Today I want to talk about something very important that I discuss with many patients during consultations. If someone expects something to be one hundred percent gone after cosmetic surgery, then surgery may not be the right approach for them.

Cosmetic surgery is designed to improve and enhance the natural appearance of the body, but it works with living tissue. Every patient heals differently, and the goal is always improvement and balance rather than absolute perfection. When I evaluate a patient, I focus on what can realistically be improved in a safe and natural looking way.

For example, procedures that address loose skin, excess fat, or aging changes can create dramatic improvements. However, surgery cannot erase every line, every asymmetry, or every sign of aging completely. The human body simply does not work that way, and honest expectations are one of the most important parts of a successful outcome.

That is why communication and careful planning matter so much. With more than 26 years in private practice and over 6,500 five star reviews from patients, I spend a lot of time listening to patients and helping them understand what surgery can and cannot achieve so they feel confident and informed about their decision.

When expectations are realistic and the goal is improvement rather than perfection, cosmetic surgery can be incredibly rewarding. The best results are the ones that look natural and help patients feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin.

Major weight loss can be an incredible accomplishment, but sometimes the skin does not completely follow your new shape.

With the growing popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, more people are asking about loose skin around the abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts, face, and neck.

That is where individualized body contouring can enter the conversation.

Depending on your anatomy and goals, options may include tummy tuck surgery, breast lifting, arm lifting, thigh lifting, facial procedures, or other contouring treatments.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, the goal is not to erase your weight-loss journey. It is to help your outside better reflect how far you have come.

Cooler weather, sweaters, scarves, and fewer outdoor events can make autumn an appealing time to start thinking about facial rejuvenation.

Maybe your eyes look more tired than you feel.

Maybe your jawline has changed.

Maybe you simply want to look fresher heading into the holidays and the new year.

From eyelid surgery and facelifts to neck rejuvenation and nonsurgical options, there are many ways to create a refreshed appearance without changing what makes your face uniquely yours.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, the conversation always starts with your goals.

Your fall refresh might be more subtle than you think.

Melatonin and Sleep – What New Research Is Showing

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in The Chicago area. Today I want to talk about something many people use to help them sleep, melatonin supplements.

Melatonin is a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate your sleep and wake cycle, and many people take it as an over the counter supplement when they struggle with insomnia or jet lag.

A recent large research review looked at health records from more than 130,000 adults with insomnia who had taken melatonin for a year or longer. The researchers found that people using melatonin long term were more likely to develop heart failure, be hospitalized for heart failure, or die from any cause compared to people with insomnia who were not using melatonin.

Now it is important to understand that this study only found an association and not proof that melatonin directly causes these problems. However, the findings do raise real questions about the long term safety of taking melatonin supplements regularly, especially because these products are widely available and often assumed to be completely harmless.

Another issue is that supplements in the United States are not regulated the same way medications are. This means the dosage and purity of melatonin products can vary from brand to brand, which may lead to inconsistent effects for people using them over time.

I always encourage patients to think carefully about long term supplement use and focus first on healthy lifestyle habits that support better sleep naturally. Good sleep hygiene, consistent schedules, and overall wellness often make a significant difference in sleep quality and long term health.

More patients today are looking for something very specific: improvement without looking overdone.

The goal is not to become someone else. It is to look refreshed, balanced, confident, and still completely like yourself.

Whether you are considering facial rejuvenation, eyelid surgery, breast surgery, or body contouring, the best treatment plan should complement your natural anatomy and your personal goals.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, every patient deserves an individualized approach because there is no one-size-fits-all definition of beauty.

Subtle can be powerful.

Laser vs Microneedling – Which Skin Treatment Do You Really Need?

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in The Chicago area. One of the most common questions patients ask me is whether laser treatments or microneedling are better for improving their skin. Both treatments can stimulate collagen and improve skin quality, but they work in very different ways and are designed to address different concerns.

Laser treatments use focused light energy to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin. That controlled heat stimulates collagen production while improving tone, redness, and overall radiance. Many patients love laser treatments because they can create a smoother, brighter appearance with very little downtime, making them a great option when someone wants that refreshed glow before an event.

Microneedling works differently by creating tiny controlled microchannels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger your body’s natural healing response, which stimulates collagen remodeling and improves texture over time. Radiofrequency microneedling goes even deeper by delivering heat through the needles, which can help tighten the skin and improve more advanced concerns like laxity and deeper wrinkles.

In my practice, the choice really depends on the patient’s goals and skin condition — someone looking for a quick improvement in tone and brightness may benefit from a laser treatment, while someone who wants deeper collagen stimulation and tightening may be a better candidate for microneedling. And of course, doing both is even better.

I have found that personalized treatment plans make the biggest difference. Sometimes the best results come from combining technologies strategically so we can address both the surface of the skin and the deeper collagen structure.

After skin cancer removal, patients can sometimes be left with a defect that requires thoughtful reconstruction, especially in highly visible or delicate areas.

This is where plastic surgery becomes an important combination of medicine, anatomy, reconstruction, and aesthetics.

The goal is not simply to close an area.

It is to carefully consider healing, function, contour, and appearance whenever possible.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, skin cancer treatment and reconstruction remind us of something important:

Plastic surgery can be about confidence, but it can also be about restoration.

Breast lift or breast augmentation? Here is the difference that matters.

More volume and a higher position are not the same goal.

Breast augmentation is generally focused on adding volume and enhancing breast shape.

A breast lift is designed to reshape and reposition breasts that have experienced sagging or changes from pregnancy, aging, genetics, or weight fluctuations.

And for some patients, achieving their desired result may involve discussing both.

There is no universal perfect breast shape or size.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, the conversation begins with your proportions, your lifestyle, and what makes you feel comfortable in your own body.

Personalized always beats one-size-fits-all.
